Meet Paula Muto of UBERDOC in Lawrence

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paula Muto.

Paula, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a surgeon from a family of surgeons, working in an inner city and watching first hand how difficult things have become for patients and doctors. I decided I could keep writing angry letters to the WSJ or try to do something to change it. I opted for the latter and 18 months later I am suddenly the Founder and CEO of a rapidly growing startup that makes it easy for a patient to see a surgical specialist without having to wait on hold or having to get a referral. UBERDOC is a web app that connects a patient directly to a specialist for a single transparent price. A really simple idea that solves an unnecessarily complicated problem and puts the doctor-patient interaction ahead of the insurance requirements. That’s why we are the new face of old-fashioned medicine.

Has it been a smooth road?
As a surgeon, I am used to making decisions quickly, so building a site through the Agile method was something I could understand. However, knowing how to market a new service through social media or trying to figure out how to find investors, was and is challenging because I am learning as I go.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with UBERDOC – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
UBERDOC is a patient to specialist web app.that provides an accelerated appointment date for a single, transparent price. I am most proud of my team of advisors who come from all aspects of healthcare; nurses, doctors, administrators, health information experts all came together to make it better. We are the only company who thinks the patient should have the right to choose what’s best for them or their family and makes it affordable to do so. We also have a lot of women in our company who multitask and get the work done!

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Boston is my home port. So I am sentimental about it. It’s a great big small town with some of the smartest people and best medical care. However, it’s ancient roadways are so clogged with excess traffic, it should be a pedestrian city.
