Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Dimos.
Paul, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been working in the optical industry since I was 19. When I first moved to Boston from Greece, I worked in surfacing and finishing labs. It wasn’t until I became an American citizen that I started my own wholesale finishing lab with my wife, Nora. We did the work for optometrists in the surrounding areas for many years. We decided to turn the wholesale lab into retail and work directly with customers. The original store was located in Winchester Center. In 2007, we moved to Lexington Center where we are currently located.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
All businesses have their challenges. In our case, starting our own wholesale lab meant we had to establish relationships with new accounts and maintain their loyalty. It became easier as accounts were pleased with our work and recommended us to others. It was primarily word-of-mouth that helped us grow our accounts from the foundation that we started.
After we transitioned from wholesale to retail, we had to create our client base once again since we were now dealing with the consumer. Our clients were highly satisfied with our services and in turn recommended us to others, once again building our business through positive feedback.
Please tell us about Eye Look Optical.
We are an independent retail optical boutique with our one and only location in Lexington. We specialize in frames and lenses. Once a client has their prescription from a doctor, we take care of the rest. We are primarily known for our unique and extensive frame selection, the lenses that we offer and our customer service. We take pride in giving our clients an amazing in-store experience, which is something you cannot get online in this day and age of online shopping. We assist our clients in finding amazing frames (we also offer a stylist who works by appointments) and provide them with high-end quality lenses from our manufacturer that we have selected based on our research.
There are a few things that set us apart from other optical stores. First of all, no matter how complicated a prescription is, we will always be able to fill it. We have invested in top of the line equipment to ensure that we provide the best final product to our clients. We have an on-site finishing lab where we do all of the finishing work, giving us complete control and ensuring the utmost quality of the final product. This also allows us to do a lot of custom work, especially with rimless frames. Secondly, the majority of the frame companies we carry are from Europe, with a couple from the US and Japan. We want to give our clients the best in style, (conservative or funky) and most importantly, quality. Third, and most important, we don’t just sell to our clients; we also educate them on our products and how to take care of their glasses. We go over in detail why the lenses we sell are excellent, how their selection will benefit them, what the differences are with all the other lenses on the market etc. It’s important to us that our clients know what they are purchasing and why it is the best.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
It has been an incredible journey building our business. There have been challenges along the way as to be expected, but it’s navigating through those challenges that got us to where we are today. We are content and grateful and for that reason if we had to start over, we would do everything exactly the same.
