Meet Patty McPherson of Mirbeau Inn & Spa at The Pinehills in Plymouth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patty McPherson.

Patty, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My previous work experience went back and forth between business and education, so it’s interesting that I ended up in hospitality. I have an undergrad degree in Management and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration; my corporate jobs were in advertising, consumer marketing, and communications. I wasn’t feeling that my career was making enough of a difference so later I chose to get my teaching credentials and taught for 7 years. Then, when my kids were little, I stayed home with them until I started my own consulting business. One of my clients was bidding on a project for Mirbeau, and after doing some research, I learned that a resort was going to be opening only 10 minutes from my home. I thought it’d be nice to get in on the ground floor of something new and different. Four years (and four job titles) later, here I am.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think most people can say their career is a series of winding roads and bumps and chance meetings and choices that lead you to where you are. I did not expect to be doing what I am doing now, but I love it. I think I expected to graduate college and follow a straight trajectory into jobs in the same field. As a stay-at-home mom with a business, one of the challenges was finding the time to put in to the business. I could only schedule client work when my husband (a college professor) was home, such as nights and weekends, and work at the computer had to be done during naps.

Please tell us about Mirbeau Inn & Spa at The Pinehills.
Mirbeau Inn & Spa is a French-inspired 50-room resort with a 14-treatment-room spa, indoor and outdoor restaurants, and event spaces. As you drive up, we look like a castle with gardens and ponds – it’s a beautiful place to work! We opened in June 2014, and I serve as general manager for the property. Mirbeau is a family-owned company comprised of a management company in Saratoga Springs, NY; a resort in Skaneateles, NY; our property in MA; a new spa with bistro in Albany, NY; and another resort coming next year in NY. Our tag line is “Life. Classically Balanced.” and I think what we’re known for is being a relaxing getaway. Guests can enjoy classic pleasures like fine dining, wine, caring for themselves in the spa, rejuvenating and spending time with loved ones. I am most proud of how hard we all work to make special experiences happen for others.
