Today we’d like to introduce you to Pamela Messenger.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Friends of Post Office Square was founded in 1983 to consider the acquisition of a city-owned parking garage so that it could be demolished and replaced with a larger underground garage and a beautiful park. Our founder, Norman B. Leventhal, assembled a group of civic minded abutters and the site was acquired, plans were developed and the deteriorating garage was demolished in 1988. The award-winning Garage At Post Office Square opened in 1990 with 1,400 spaces on 7 levels underground. It is open 24/7/365. The Park at Post Office Square was completed in 1992 and re-named Norman B. Leventhal Park in 1997. Today the Park is 25 years old, it features a large, inviting fountain designed by Providence’s Howard Ben Tre, a lush lawn and Sip Café. In the summer, our famous seat cushions are out so you can sit on the grass while you enjoy midday music. The fifth season of p.o.fitness runs 10 weeks, with before and after work classes. The Park is a green oasis in the middle of the City.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We try not to dwell on anything but the positives.
Friends of Post Office Square – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The Garage At Post Office Square is always open, and its Boston’s most convenient place to park.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I am proudest of the environmental measures we have undertaken. Our lighting and mechanical upgrades in both the Park and the Garage have reduced electric consumption by 30% in the last decade. We signed a Power Purchase Agreement for large-scale solar energy in 2016 and have offset 100% of our electric consumption with solar power. When we signed, we were the smallest participant in large scale green power in the US. We use reclaimed groundwater, not drinking water, to flush the toilets in our restrooms, which are open 24/7. This saves 1,500 gallons of drinking water every day! Being a greener, more aware business is exciting and hopefully inspiring to others.
