Meet Omri Shor of Medisafe in Back Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Omri Shor.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Omri. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My father has Type 2 Diabetes. Six years ago, in 2012, he accidentally took a double dose of insulin, which led to an emergency. Thankfully his life was saved, but we were left thinking that with all the technology available today, there must be a way to prevent medical emergencies like the one our father experienced.

After we researched further, we were astonished to learn that this problem – of people not taking their medication properly – is a huge health crisis: 125,000 people die each year in the U.S. as a result of medication nonadherence, and the cost to the healthcare industry is a whopping $290 Billion a year (due to preventable hospitalizations, for example). We founded Medisafe and developed a platform that helps people manage their medications, easily and effectively, from their smartphones.

Today, we have offices in Israel and Boston, with over 40 employees.

Has it been a smooth road?
We’ve worked very hard to get to where we are today. The healthcare industry is very complex, often bureaucratic and difficult to navigate.

Our business partners are often payors and pharma companies – to whom we supply de-identifies and aggregated data which helps them to improve their offering to patients (HIPAA compliant) – large companies whom we need to convince with a strong value proposition.

We are constantly working on our platform to make it both the most intuitive and attractive for people to use and to make it valuable for our business partners.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Medisafe – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Medisafe is the leading medication management platform, with over 4.5 million registered users, who give the app an average of 4.7 out of five stars on the App Store and Google Play Store. We get letters every day from people who tell us that Medisafe helps them manage their meds, gives them peace of mind and frees them up to live their lives, and even saves lives.

What differentiates us from our competitors is that we are very focused on the people who use Medisafe. Medication management issues are complicated and require a personalized approach, and were the only ones to use AI to solve this.

We recently launched a feature which alerts people when there is a potentially dangerous interaction between different meds they are prescribed (we’re all prescribed medications from doctors, dentists, specialists … and often nobody makes sure that all these meds don’t interact with one another).

This feature alone is responsible for preventing thousands of medical emergencies and saving lives. Every time we get an email from someone who tells us a story about how Medisafe saved their life – these are our proudest and most inspiring moments.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Launching Medisafe’s US operations from Boston was a key strategic move that established the foundation for our success in North America. The unparalleled healthcare ecosystem in Boston is very useful to us. The pool of potential employees in Boston is also one of the best to be found – in healthcare, sales, marketing and more.

For us, the time difference between Boston and Israel makes travel and contact between our two offices manageable. And Boston’s quality of life is great. The many healthcare startups active in Boston are a testament to all the advantages the city has to offer.
