Meet Nina Pfister of Mooring Advisory Group in Hingham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina Pfister.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I had spent nearly a decade grinding in the corporate world, gaining professional experience in Marketing, Public Relations and Sales at a global media company (& PR agency in between).

When my son was still an infant, I made an aggressive career decision to take on an executive sales role at a tech startup that allowed me to work remotely, assuming I would have more flexibility if I didn’t commute to an office—but I was mistaken. The position required lots of travel with little room for balance, and I felt as though I was abandoning my son and my extremely patient & supportive husband (Steven) who held down the fort while I was gone amidst his own busy full-time career.

My breaking point involved sobbing uncontrollably alone on an airplane, plagued by guilt and a deep desire to transform my life. I needed more balance, plain and simple. It wasn’t the startup’s fault that I chose the wrong role, it was up to me to make a change.

After I returned from that trip, I had important conversations with my husband, family, friends and mentors who all thankfully encouraged me to follow my gut and venture out on my own to build something new.

I had done Marketing and PR consulting for our family’s steel construction business over the years, and my mother re-emphasized that there was a growing, local market for small business owners who needed affordable, outsourced help.

Mooring Advisory Group was founded just one month later as a full-service Marketing, PR & Sales boutique agency for local, small-medium sized businesses…and I’ve never looked back!

Has it been a smooth road?
The road to building a new business is bumpy, to say the least! I’m sure every entrepreneur would agree that there are many unexpected twists and turns that arise along each unique journey, especially in the beginning.

When you’re building something from scratch, you’re not only the big-picture visionary, you’re also the knitty-gritty-detail-doer. You have to create your mission AND execute it seamlessly. I was fortunate to have the challenge of overflow in the beginning. My gut instinct was right—there WAS a large market waiting for Mooring Advisory Group (MAG) and with my sales background, I was able to quickly land several solid accounts from the get-go. Then, it was time to deliver.

As our business volume steadily increased, I was ready to hire top-notch talent to help grow and manage our account base, and achieve the work/life balance I had been hoping for.

I am so thankful that the timing was right to bring on our Growth Consultant, Lauren Gill. Lauren joined MAG this year and has been instrumental in building out our brand—serving as both an amazing sounding board and strategic business partner.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Mooring Advisory Group (MAG) is a boutique consulting agency working hand-in-hand with local small to medium-sized businesses across industry to develop innovative Sales Enablement solutions that drive growth.

With a deep expertise in Marketing, Public Relations, and Sales, we serve as a natural arm of your staff to amplify your brand via content, communications and conversion initiatives via tangible deliverables that tie directly to revenue growth.

On an average day at MAG, you’ll find us grinding it out on client deliverables like social media management, press release writing, media pitching, event planning, ad consulting, email campaigns, prospecting, cold calling, the list goes on!

We are most proud of the positive feedback that our clients have willingly shared with us and others. As a service-based organization, testimonials ultimately establish credibility. So when we have referral leads coming in directly from our account base, or clients who offer a case study demonstrating growth correlating to MAG, I am both humbled and filled with a deep sense of accomplishment.

I believe what sets us apart from our local competitors is our sales background. Our tagline is “Where Marketing & Sales Tie the Knot, Achieving Growth.” We don’t just focus on designing gorgeous materials, or building a large social media following, or landing a piece or two of press coverage. Our goal is to help our clients see the larger picture—how are your Marketing and PR efforts tying to MEASURABLE revenue growth? We analyze what’s working and what’s not working, then create and deliver a customized program of services accordingly. Nothing we offer is “off-the-shelf.”

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Boston is the perfect city to start a business! Tufts said it best, “With 100-plus colleges and universities, an unparalleled concentration of internationally renowned science and technology businesses, and a dynamic start-up culture fueled by ever-expanding venture capital resources, the Boston region is more than Silicon Valley East. Boston is home to the first officially designated Innovation Districts in the United States.”

The Boston Business Women’s community is especially strong, and so willing to support one another. It certainly takes time and effort to put your brand out there at local networking events and build your rolodex of business contacts, but the opportunity is certainly here in Boston!
