Today we’d like to introduce you to Natascha Saunders.
Natascha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Accepted a job as the Assistant HRM for Macy’s where I was in charge of hiring and training. It’s common for youth to work in retail or food service for their first jobs. This is where I noticed students and young adults were unprepared for their interview. They weren’t dressed the part. Their writing was messy. They couldn’t answer the questions, etc. Fast forward to using the library of my graduate school to meet with these students it was there that the librarian asked me what I was doing with all these youth coming in to ask for me. She’s the one who told me I was in career development… She gave me some books to read… and it opened my whole world to this field. So many things happened in between this experience from me serving as Miss Black Rhode Island USA and my platform was career development for youth. This opened up all my speaking engagements etc. I even served as a Goodwill Ambassador for The Gambia, West Africa. However, being born and raised in Boston – this spilled over and the speaking engagements picked up. From Brown University, Providence College, Paul Cuffee, to The Met, Jeremiah E. Burke, Roxbury Community College to Harvard. I made it a business in 2009 when someone asked for a tax ID number to pay me for my time… I had a mentor in Rhode Island named Peter Wells who runs the Providence American Newspaper and he sent me to his lawyer and accountant and I was on my way.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Absolutely not. I had no idea what it took to run a small business and in some ways I am still learning. I’ve hit rock bottom on more than one occasion. But I keep going no matter what. Even when I’m done – I get a call from a school, parent, student, organization and I’m back in business. I remember at one of my lowest points… I didn’t know if I should keep going but then Year up Boston called me and offered me a 2 year contract to provide their participants with career coaching and workshops within their company partners – such as State Street, BNY Mellon, and at that time Brown Brothers Harriman. I remember another time I wanted to give up… and then I landed a contract for the Goodwill Industries. So I keep going…. and keep going…
We’d love to hear more about your business.

Our Founder, Natascha grew up in a home with domestic violence, survived a rape in college, was diagnosed with a learning disability, battled low self-esteem and suicidal thoughts, had a brother who was found dead in the Cambridge Charles river, and that’s not all….but she is now proudly a first generation college graduate, former Miss Black Rhode Island USA and served as Goodwill Ambassador, West Africa, Gambia under the Miss Black USA Scholarship Pageant. What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was to myself in my Columbian rocking chair that my godmother who is from Columbia gave to me along with my Pomeranian dog. I had my doll babies… and went to the hairdresser every other week. I took modeling classes at Barbizon in Back Bay and sang in my church choir. I was a martial artist specializing in Tae Kwon Do and I played the piano all through my younger years… and my favorite is Beethoven and Bach. Yet, I had lots of friends in my after school program called Bird Street in Uphams Corner which is still in existence. I also grew my personality since middle school and high school student at Natick – thanks to the METCO program. I was a cheerleader and varsity singles tennis player.
