Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Gorman.
Nancy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Back in the early 1990’s when my sister got married she had no idea what to do about wedding makeup because back then it wasn’t really a thing. Everyone went to Filenes, Bloomindales or Jordan Marsh to a makeup counter and get there makeup done there.
I ended up doing her makeup that day and I got the biggest rush of my life. I never felt so confident in my life. I ended up doing a few others makeup too if I remember correctly. I didn’t proceed professionally until the early 2000’s when I went to meet my now mentor David Nicholas who taught me everything from sterilization to proper makeup looks for different faces. He gave me all the tools I needed to move forward and be the best makeup artist I could be.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not all of it has been smooth, I had some tough time in beginning getting off my feet and finding what I wanted to do with my career. Believe it or not, back then I was dead set on not doing weddings. But I never could have believed how rewarding it was and how good I was at it. The connection I made with some of my brides and bridal parties were unreal and some of the fellow wedding vendors I have met over the years are simply remarkable. The other obstacle was when I moved from right outside of Boston to the Newburyport area, it was like starting over. But seeing as I started my career once before, the 2nd time around was so much easier!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m an award winning professional makeup artist that specializes in wedding makeup. I’m known for the ability to do a Natural Makeup look in addition to softer glam. I love applying false eye lashes and have the ability to fit the right lash to the right face. I do both traditional makeup as well as Airbrush makeup. Heavy cakey makeup that so many people are afraid of is not my thing.
I am known for my caring nature and to help be a calming force during a stressful time, I work to keep to schedule, arrive on time and show up with a smile. Some of my past brides have become some of my best friends and their families have embraced me as one of their own when we see each other again.
I did not learn how to do makeup by watching YouTube video. I went to school to learn diversity and that you can’t learn on YouTube. My experience is valuable, and people agree as I was voted Best of the Northshore by the readers in 2016 & 2017,
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was a very shy girl. The 3rd child and youngest girl in an Italian/Irish family. I didn’t think about being a makeup artist when I was younger as it really wasn’t a career to be had. Since my 2 older sisters are in the medical field, I thought I might do the same thing and start off in college studying Psychology. But as interesting as it was, it just didn’t feel right and changed to Business school. Then came a day in the early 2000’s when I met David Nicholas, and my world changed.
