Today we’d like to introduce you to Midgie Franz.
Midgie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I thought about attending acupuncture school three times in my life. In my early twenties, I became a health nut “junkie”. Not only would I eat smoothies with spirulina, wheat grass, and bee pollen, and dabble at being vegetarian, and becoming gluten free and dairy free, I would read a lot of books from Michael Pollen, Paul Pitchford, and Anne Marie Colbin. I also loved herbal medicine and loved growing plants. In my twenties and thirties diet changes and herbal medicine solved all my health problems better than Western Medicine ever did. I was more convinced of the power of traditional medicine to heal.
As I pursued my passion for a holistic greener lifestyle, I realized more and more that I needed to get out of my corporate accounting job, and into the world of preventative medicine. I wanted others to discover the same empowering information about health and healing that I had. I felt within me a sense of purpose that no corporate job would offer. Acupuncture school was knocking on my door three times, but it took me the third time for my soul to notice and take action. Embarking on it was the best decision that I made.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being self-employed is not a smooth road, at least for me. I’m not sure if anyone would say it is. However, I’m a person who often prefers a challenge. One of my greatest struggles is balancing being an outstanding clinician and effective healer for my patients, and running a business. With student loans still looming, I feel that extra pressure to produce income, yet balance that with my desire to make my services affordable for patients. It requires a constant reflection of self-assessment, looking at opportunities and constant decision-making. Mostly it is knowing when to outsource a business activity and especially knowing when to block my schedule for a day off or a vacation.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Better Life Acupuncture & Herbs – what should we know?
I help people with chronic conditions to find solutions to their issues and empower their inner healer using Eastern medicine principles. I specialize in pain management, women’s and men’s health issues, fertility and pregnancy, digestive disorders, stress management, and management of chronic illness. Not only do I provide Acupuncture treatments, cupping, electro acupuncture, and herbal medicine, I include lifestyle counseling and advice to all my patients. I am a licensed acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist. I am also a Certified Holistic Health Counselor. My training from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition helped me become a good listener for my patients, so I can help them feel better and be a “better version of themselves.” My training in both Western herbal medicine from the Boston School of Herbal Studies and Chinese herbal medicine from the New England School of Acupuncture allows me to offer additional tools for patients to help them heal. With my passion for diet, herbs, and movement (West African dancer for almost 20 years, active yoga, and hiker), I am a big advocate for my patients to eat in a way that supports their optimal health and to engage in physical activities that they love.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My family, acupuncture friends, colleagues, my assistant, and many of my patients have played a significant role in my success: my parents, not only because they help me do my laundry, but they have supported me with their steadfast interest in my business, including the ups and downs, and offers of support; my sister and her family for being my willing guinea pigs at the beginning of my journey; my patients kind reviews and generous feedback; my assistant and my professional colleagues.
Many acupuncture friends, other health practitioners, and my assistant have really supported me in my evolution as a practitioner. I think it’s our shared common goal of wanting to help people that makes us help one another both with business strategies and healing advancements. I feel truly blessed with the positive and supportive network that I have.
