Meet Michelle Burns of Marilyn James Health and Beauty in Somerville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Burns.

Michelle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been a stylist for 9 years around the Boston area. I ventured out on my own in 2015. I rent a chair in Somerville. Marilyn James Health and beauty is my personal business. I’m working on my online brand. I want to set out in this industry to create a path for people to feel comfortable in their own skin. My purpose as a stylist is to “illuminate natural beauty”

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. There were times I wanted to give up. Times I thought I didn’t have what it takes to make it in this industry. But for whatever reason I kept putting work and time into my education and craft as a stylist.

I’m lucky I get the opportunity to be a part of other people’s lives. I am able to help them feel better. Sometimes it’s just as simple as they love their hair. Or sometimes I get to be a therapist. And the best part is when I get to be a friend.

At times I get to feel like an artist. But the most rewarding part of my career is feeling like I may have helped someone. This road has never been smooth but it has been worth every bump

Please tell us about Marilyn James Health and Beauty.
My job as a stylist is to empower and bring out my clients inner confidence. By providing services tailored to their individual characteristics. Illuminating their natural beauty.

I specialize in color correction. Many different highlight techniques from bayalage to ombré. Precision cutting and Deva cut and style. Formal styles and up do’s. Working with all hair types.

The idea behind Marilyn James Health and Beauty is simple. Its beauty and strength

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite memories from childhood was watching my mom or older sister get ready. Fluffing their bangs. Opening their mouth so they could keep her eyes open while they put on mascara. I wanted to be just like them when I got older

Unfortunately my mom passed away when I was fourteen. I often imagine how she would be completely taking advantage of having a daughter for a stylist.
