Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Ulman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a found object, mixed media, sculptor from Boston. I share a studio with my father and we both sculpt using objects from the past repurposing them into art. I grew up helping my father in our old basement workshop construct his sculptures. Surrounded by hundreds of rusty metal objects learning to see their future life.
Today the same is happening. I enjoy “day-shifting” with my father and helping with his projects, then “night-shifting” alone and enveloping myself in my many projects.
Has it been a smooth road?
The struggle is a challenge to be an artist, at least an artist without a day job. It’s helpful to have support from my two artist parents that understand the struggle. Getting the art in front of the right people is a challenge too. I love the build but hate the rest, but it’s great and motivating when you sell something.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Roslindale Studio – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I make a lot of vehicles with wild engines, the engine is mostly the prominent part. Motorcycles, hotrods, speedboats, plains, etc. To make a static sculpture that evokes sound, power and movement is the goal.
I have a collection of female sculptures using found objects that juxtaposes the vehicle projects.
The one that comes to mind of what I’m proud of was the opportunity to work on the Mad Max Fury Road movie. Went to Australia for 3 months to work on vehicles weapons and whatever they wanted me for. I made the flame throwing guitar for the film. Was epic.
