Meet Michael Pires of The Kush Groove Shop in Roxbury

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Pires.

Michael, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started like many other ambitious young adults, by enrolling in college and doing all the things that I thought I should do to get me closer to achieving my goals. While at Northeastern I soon realized that I was unsure of what goals were, and further, I was not certain that this was the correct path into achieving my dreams. I was secure in my decision to attend a University and from this experience be able to refine the skills needed to write well, learn from my peers and dapple in fields that only one can while in college. All the while this desire to become independent and follow a dream continued to grow in me. I graduated with a business degree, entered the workforce the way most people do, and at night I would doodle, write ideas and talk endlessly about whom I wanted to become.

It was during these streams of consciousness that I sold this idea of Kush Groove to my friends. They too had followed this path of college to career while nursing this dream of becoming their own boss.

As the dream of Kush Groove became more and more concrete, we began to put in place the necessary steps to solidify the brand—making sure that this was a business that would allow us to earn an honest wage, but also allow us the creative outlet we all needed to feel fulfilled.

Because of the passion that fueled this brand, the hard work that it took to get it started, and the relatable narrative of a couple friends trying to make a dream a reality the brand has taken off; speaking to a wide consumer base made-up of a diverse group of people, all sharing in common their love for Kush.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Never is the road to self-realization a smooth road. There are the inevitable insecurities of leaving a secure job, a safe path, and a conventional life that the small business owner grapples with at the start of his endeavor. There were real issues of finding a location, raising the funds, and then taking the risk of pulling all of your resources and dumping into an idea that could very well fail—and further asking my friends to also take this huge risk with me. The pressure is immense because there is no safety net and no one to blame for your missteps.

The Kush Groove Shop – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Kush Groove is predominantly an apparel company that also sells art, tobacco and smoking accessories. The designs are all original and marijuana themed. We are a company that prides itself in contributing to the positive image of marijuana culture, not only by educating the wider community of its benefits but by also dispelling the stereotype of the marijuana user as portrayed by the mainstream media. We offer a platform for the urban stoner—the active, educated, conscious, contributing member of our society. This is a perspective that is often mute from the discourse of marijuana usage and its role in our society.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Over the years the team and I have accomplished many things. We’ve won Raw Accessories Designer of the Year, Boston Designer of the Year, hosted tons of events and developed cool products but nothing tops opening our first flag-ship store. Being surrounded by family, friends and longtime supporters during the grand opening is a feeling I will never forget. The Kush Groove Shop is like a second home to us and many others.

By opening the shop it has allowed us to directly interact with and strengthen relationships with our customer base. Getting up every day & opening the doors to something you’ve dreamt of and worked so hard for is truly an amazing feeling.
