Meet Meaghan Corson of Your Video Brand in North Andover

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meaghan Corson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Meaghan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I believe everyone has a story and a story that’s worth sharing. I’m truly passionate about storytelling and empowering people to share their message. I started telling and sharing people’s stories as a TV news reporter for a CBS affiliate in the Quad Cities in Rock Island, IL which is south of Chicago. You name it I’ve covered it from the local county fair and government to shootings and train explosions. I’m grateful for the people I’ve connected with and helped during my time as a reporter and really loved helping people light up on camera.

I transitioned from news into the corporate world because I wanted to find another way to use my skills and do what I enjoy with more balance. I’ve created in house video marketing programs from scratch for a couple businesses from a billion dollar Software Company to a small startup. I liked opening up their minds to the power of video and seeing how video can help achieve a variety of business goals.

From there, I started my own business first as a video marketing agency to fill in the gap of businesses getting great video but with no strategy behind it. I want people to produce video with purpose, not for the sake of having it. I see large and small companies pumping out video that don’t really have a purpose and therefore don’t effectively bring in more business. My main goal is to solve and prevent this issue.

Now I more so serve as a professional speaker and consultant on all things related to business videos. I work with executives and professionals to map out their video strategy and to be great on camera so they can connect with the masses. I’ve spoken at a variety of industry events including for entrepreneurs and those with small businesses. Serving as a speaker at conferences and industry events is my favorite part of my business because I can help people embrace the power of video in a larger scale and it gives me the chance to travel more. I love getting people up and moving and actually have fun with video (yes, it’s possible)!

My career has changed so much in such a short period of time, but one thing that’s common throughout is the combination of storytelling and video.

Has it been a smooth road?
Everyone has their own challenges when pursuing their business and personal dreams, and I’m no different. I’ll share with you three main struggles I’ve handled thus far.

When I was a news reporter I loved what I did and was good at it but over time I felt more and more out of balance. I have workaholic tendencies and given the nature of the TV news world that was magnified to the point of affecting my health and happiness. I naturally have an energetic and bubbly personality and I like that about me, so once I realized my positive energy was going down and I wasn’t as excited about my job I knew something had to change. For me, it was leaving the news world and exploring other ways to help people share stories in another way. This first brought me to the corporate world and now I’ve found that being an entrepreneur is my true calling to help people and feel fulfilled.

Right before I started my own business I worked for a startup of an online community for service members and Veterans. Initially I entered this marketing position because I wanted to be challenged more and make a bigger impact on the company as a whole and help with a wonderful cause. I felt energized taking the lead on marketing initiatives and seeing the online community grow and strengthen with content and engagement for the members. Yet over time I fell into the same issue from when I was a reporter… no proper work life balance. There were other challenges with organization management and delegation, but long story short I was let go with no notice. I was truly shocked and sad when this happened as I poured all of my efforts into the startup, yet now I see it as an amazing push I needed to finally start my own business. This gave me the opportunity to focus on my life goals and take the exciting risk of starting my own business. There really is a silver lining in every situation.

This next challenge I’ll share doesn’t pinpoint on one moment of a struggle but there was a distinct turning point for me. Once I newly started my business I lined up my first video client right away and was grateful to find more video clients for smaller projects and eventually grew to have my first regular consulting client (one I’ve worked with for over three years now). Yet I didn’t have the flow of income I was looking for and I didn’t feel like I was truly fulfilled by my work to its fullest extent. I had a part time data research job that gave me the income I needed to live and the flexibility for my business, but I didn’t want to keep it forever. The turning point for me was discovering professional speaking. I didn’t realize that people got paid to speak at conferences and events and I had been told by multiple business people I’ve connected with that I should speak and share my knowledge. When I had set in my mind that I wanted to pursue this shortly after I was asked to speak at an entrepreneur event in Texas. I took the opportunity and spoke to an audience of over 300 entrepreneurs and loved it! Not a bad way to start off my speaking career, right? With practically no experience presenting to large groups in this way and minor preparation, the audience enjoyed the information and stories I shared, and it felt so natural to me. I knew this was my way to really help people, achieve fulfillment in what I do, and bring in the income I was looking for.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
As a Video Marketing Speaker & Consultant, I work with executives and professionals to map out their video strategy and to be great on camera so they can connect with the masses. My “super power” is helping people feel comfortable on camera and share their message. The biggest compliment I get on video shoots is hearing the person say “I forgot the camera was even there” and I know I did my job.

When I speak at conferences and events I’m known for sharing informative and interactive presentations. I often get people shooting video with their phones and having fun with video. Getting started with video can be the hardest part especially for small business owners, so I love helping them move through that barrier and see all those light bulbs go off in their heads. I’m also not that speaker who lectures. I weave in stories from my life and my clients’ experiences to make it easier for people to understand and remember the information I share on video and branding. Event planners particularly like working with me because they know that I go beyond the presentation itself. I genuinely care about the audience’s success and experience, so I’ll do things like attend the entire conference, invite people to ask questions outside of my talk, offer private training for the event staff, and even serve on additional panels. Many speakers will fly in and fly out the same day they give their presentations (and that’s fine) but that’s not my style. The more I can give to enhance my client’s experience the better and more fulfilled I feel.

Something I’m particularly proud of is the transformations I’m able to help people achieve whether through consulting or event presentations. I’m all about taking action and I know many people take lots of notes at conferences but don’t actually implement what they’ve learned, so I get really excited when people reach back out to me after the event with links to videos they’ve created or showing that they’ve mapped out a video plan for their organization or team. It’s amazing seeing what videos can do for businesses.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Boston is an amazing place to start out as a business consultant or speaker! There are so many companies, large and small, in the area seeking expertise in marketing and business consulting. As a professional speaker it’s really great because so many companies host their events in Boston whether they’re local or international.

I recommend going to networking events for your particularly industry and events where your ideal clients are. This is easier for business consultants and agencies and a more challenging for professional speakers. There are professional organizations to develop your speaking skills and connect with fellow speakers. I wish there were more events that brought together speakers and event planners, so we can meet face to face and form business relationships more easily.

In general, focus on building authentic relationships and getting to know people because those become lasting relationships that lead to business. So often people just try to sell their products and services at events and collect business cards with minimal to no follow up. You can stand out and become more successful by going beyond the business side of conversations and seeing what you have in common with the people you’re meeting. Sometimes finding out that you have kids around the same age or a dream vacation in common makes a huge difference in someone wanting to stay connected to you and refer business to you. I truly believe in being authentic in business and life, and that’ll naturally bring the things you want in life to you.
