Meet Mario Lucca of Lucca Oral and Facial Surgery in Copley Plaza

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mario Lucca.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mario. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and I have been practicing dentistry in Massachusetts for nearly 15 years. I am a native to Massachusetts on the North Shore and attended college at St. Michael’s College in Vermont.

I received my D.M.D. from the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 2002. After completing a post-graduate internship in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery in 2003, I held a clinical faculty position at Tufts University. For a period of about 3 years, I provided private practice general dentistry in the greater Boston area for 3 years prior to returning to Tufts to pursue my surgical training.

I received my certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 2010. I completed my general surgery and anesthesia training with rotations at Tufts Medical Center, Winchester Hospital, and the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital. I received board certification in 2012.

After working at a large private practice for about 5 years, I decided it was time to pursue the establishment of Lucca Oral and Facial Surgery. My desire was to establish an upscale and comfortable environment available for dental colleagues and their patients to receive oral surgery services. The business location is at 185 Dartmouth Street and it was conceptualized, designed, and built from scratch. Now, almost a year and a half since opening the doors, It’s incredible to think that the suite was once a wide open empty space with concrete walls and floors. The practice is dedicated to my late sister Jaclyn (Lucca) Tahboub and the business logo is her signature, of our last name.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My career path was certainly not smooth and neither was an establishment of the business. But, I don’t think most worthwhile things are without a struggle.

My career and my life were interrupted early on with a cancer diagnosis. I was treated for a dangerous malignancy called liposarcoma. It was a very scary time, but today, I am blessed to be healthy and cancer-free. And, ultimately, I think the experience shaped my desire to be bold and become an entrepreneur.

Please tell us about Lucca Oral and Facial Surgery.
Lucca Oral and Facial Surgery is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery specialty practice. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a specialty of dentistry that addresses a wide range of surgical needs. My practice is focused on the placement of dental implants, wisdom tooth removal, oral bone grafting procedures, and office-based anesthesia.

I am proud of the relationships I have with my colleagues. In the summer of 2017, I was recognized and nominated by my peers to Boston Magazine’s inaugural issue of Top Dentists in the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. I was honored and proud for such recognition with a business that was less than a year old at the time.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
That is a difficult question to answer. I think I have made some good decisions under sometimes difficult circumstances without the benefit of hindsight. I think that had any one thing been different along the way, Lucca Oral and Facial Surgery would not be as it is today.
