Meet Marina Baklanova

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marina Baklanova.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am a Boston-based professional photographer, wife and mother of two.

Five years ago my husband, my son and I, a fresh business school graduate, moved to California from Europe. I totally started out as a “mom with a camera”: I followed my son with my camera everywhere, fine-tuning what I learnt at school and online! Once, when my husband was on a business trip, I set myself a challenge, I decided to see if I can find any paying clients: I did find 3 in 1 week! I was over the Moon when I realized:
1. People are ready to pay me for doing what I love;
2.They are extremely happy with the result I can produce.

Since then I have become a certified professional photographer, won several awards, moved from the West to the East Coast of the US, and started my own Marina Baklanova Photography business, specializing in creative moment-driven wedding and family photography.

Please tell us about your art.
I absolutely love people and love photographing them. I always look for raw emotions and real moments. My goal is to show the beauty and the dynamics of each family in a vibrant, genuine, yet elegant and fun way. I hope that when people look at the photos I took of them, they start FEELING what it felt like at that moment and start recognizing true selves.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
I truly believe that what we do as photographers is tremendously important, especially in today’s difficult times, when the pace of life is extremely fast, and peace is so fragile.

People tend to forget. Forget how happy they are to have a loving soulmate by their side, how wonderful today is when their kids are healthy, and there is no war in their country. Basically, photographers build people’s memories when capturing wedding days, those romantic times of the two just engaged or those crazy family moments.

It is in perspective that we start to appreciate. But to have that perspective, one needs to have the vivid memories, That is where my art steps in, Capturing REAL people and TIMELESS moments – that is what important and what will never go out of fashion.
