Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisey Good.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Professionally, I’ve had two different careers since college: I started in Marketing and Communications and then I opened my own interior design firm, which I ran for 15 years. The two don’t seem connected but there is actually a link: something to do with figuring out what people want or need, and then giving it to them!
When I ‘retired’ from interior design recently, I decided to use my marketing and PR background to help non-profit organizations whose missions really matter to me. My issues have always been animals and the environment– so I’m currently helping SAS (The Scituate Animal Shelter) and Holly Hill Farm, a local nonprofit organic farm. I love it.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been a relatively smooth road! I’ve always been a big believer in doing what you love which, for me, is really the same thing as doing what comes easily or naturally. I don’t try to do things which are hard for me–maybe I’m lazy. I’m an intuitive person and I try not to second guess my ‘gut,’ which has worked for me.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
At SAS (The Scituate Animal Shelter), I’m currently President of The Board, and I’ve done communications for them for the past few years.
When I started, I applied the knowledge from my earlier marketing career, where I did infomercials and TV marketing for the largest direct marketing company in the world. One thing I learned–and that I’ve applied to SAS– is that negative doesn’t ‘sell.’ All of the communications that we do at SAS stress the positive for the animals that we help.
We don’t dwell on the sad stories or show abused animals. I marvel at ads on TV that try to raise money for animal causes by showing suffering animals. If I can’t even look at them (and I’ve volunteered for animal organizations for 2o years and been exposed to horrible stuff), I imagine that they are not as effective as they could be. I bet those ads are turning away some of the very same sensitive, animal-loving people that they are trying to reach.
At SAS, we may tell you about the tough beginning, but we always show you the happy ending. I think that has worked at spreading the message.
What were you like growing up?
I have always adored animals and loved to read and write. I think I’ve stayed remarkably consistent in that from the very earliest age. As a kid, I wanted to be Jane Goodall.
