Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexi Lombara.
Lexi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In July of 2014, myself, my mother, Lia, and my sister, Taylor, founded Colby Davis of Boston Co. We wanted to create a meaningful, timeless jewelry collection that could be passed down through generations. Being only fifteen years old at the time, my sister and I were excited to join our mom in a business venture that would allow women to wear jewelry that could tell a story of the woman wearing our pieces. Each piece is designed with a meaningful message on the reverse to bring confidence, happiness and courage into the lives of each woman wearing a Colby Davis design. From the beginning and into today, we have loved designing each piece to be layered and worn together. To be worn as a statement piece layered with our simple bar necklaces or layered in all three sizes, we want each customer to feel comfortable in personalizing their look.
From the start and still today, we continue to design and manufacturer all of our jewelry in the United States. The quality and craftsmanship is extremely important to us as the enameling process over sterling silver is an art form. From the hand engraving to the 18K embellishments, everything is made in the United States. We value the hard work of other small businesses in America and are committed to providing jobs within the United States. With headquarters in Boston, we reach customers across the nation to make Colby Davis an All American brand of quality and originality. Since before having children, Lia has studied jewelry-making and design at Boston College and the Museum of Fine Arts. Still today, she has an ever growing passion for creating unique designs while working with glass enamel in Massachusetts.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One major challenge has been balancing school and work. Having started my company while entering my sophomore year of high school, I have had to manage both aspects of my life. From waking up at 5:30 to work when school started two hours later, responding to emails and making phone calls in the hallway between class and coming home after practice at 5pm to fulfill orders and do my homework was extremely difficult. However, when I started to skip classes and practice to work, I began to realize how passionate I really was about Colby Davis. And surprisingly enough, when I entered my first year of college and was away from our office, I began to work more and more. I found that although I was away from the physical office, there was no burden of a six hour school day as I only had class for about three hours a day and had much more time for focus on the parts of my company that needed tweaking.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Colby Davis of Boston – what should we know?
Every day I work to build my business to be a brand of quality jewelry that is not only timeless and beautiful, but all designed by women and made in the United States. As a company, we are most proud to design quality jewelry that makes a woman feel elegant, confident and happy.
Through responding to customer inquiries about a product, working with my website designer to create the best online shopping experience I can for my customers or even doing the tedious work of an accountant, I have been able to immerse myself in my business. The act of designing jewelry and visiting my manufacturer in our home state of Massachusetts, is also something that I do constantly. While living in the Boston area and traveling across New England, my mother, sister and I are always designing. We are surrounded by so much elegance and beauty that we love bringing into every piece of our line. I want every woman to be able to feel confident when wearing any piece of Colby Davis because it is not just a piece of jewelry, but one that tells a story of the person wearing it.
Every day I also find myself spending countless hours on my laptop working on the marketing and advertising aspect of my company. Being the sole contributor to the Colby Davis marketing efforts, I work tirelessly to show my customers and followers everything about our company. Whether it be planning and photographing a lifestyle photo shoot with my amazing sister and friends as models, or creating a marketing calendar of different campaigns and promotions, I want to bring Colby Davis to every corner of the country.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I cannot credit anyone other than my mother, sister and myself for the success of our business. From the start, we have been the three women working to make Colby Davis the company you see today. We have been lucky enough to have an amazing father and husband who has helped with driving to trade shows and step into the booth when someone needed to use the restroom. I can also thank my brother for stepping up to help with order fulfillment as we get more and more orders each day.
