Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Metter and Lyssa Goldberg.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lauren and Lyssa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started Metter Media in September of 2013. Right before that, Lyssa and I were working at local alt-weekly DigBoston as Web Editor and Web Assistant, respectively. During my time there we took the Dig from 5,000 to 25,000 Twitter followers from tweeting out all stories and interviews and tagging the featured artists and musicians, who would then retweet us.
Restaurant and nightlife advertisers started to ask the Dig to send out promoted tweets for their events, and I thought, ‘What if we just charged them to tweet for them?’
The first 8 clients we got were through the Dig, and the publisher lets me leave to start Metter Media. Within the first 3 months, I gained clients quickly, and in December of 2013, Microsoft New England filled out the contact form on our website! They had seen the social media of Firebrand Saints, a local restaurant [now closed] in Kendall Square that tweeted about tech events in the area. This was a huge turning point for us! I called Lyssa right away and asked her to leave the Dig and join Metter Media, and the rest is history.
We now co-own and run the company together, which includes clients such as Microsoft’s local teams in New England, Chicago, New York, and Silicon Valley, as well as nearly 60 other businesses. Back in 2013, it was a lot of convincing people why they needed to be on social media. Now, it’s more people coming to us, asking us to help them get on social so they can compete within the changing landscape of digital marketing. – LAUREN
Has it been a smooth road?
I don’t think any business operates without some struggles along the way! But I do think we’ve been fortunate enough that most of what we do is online, so we really never had too much overhead/had to worry about investors or anything like that.
Plus, Lauren and I always say there’s no way either of us would be able to run this business alone. Having a partner is essential — there’s always someone there to take on the tough stuff with you, to figure out how to work out a new problem, or even just to vent to. Lauren and I were English and Journalism Majors (both at BU), so we also never had any formal ‘this is how you run a business’ training. Every decision we’ve made from beginning to end with Metter Media, we’ve worked out together as we go. – LYSSA
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Metter Media story. Tell us more about the business.
Metter Media is a boutique social media management company that focuses on localized engagement strategies for small businesses and corporations alike. We’re known mostly for our work with local restaurants — we work with more than 30 restaurants in the Greater Boston Area. But we also work with hotels, salons, real estate companies, nightlife event production companies, and wellness accounts. We have an entire insurance division and run the social media for 11 insurance agencies, both large and small. We also work with Microsoft nationally.
We’re most proud of our amazing team — 13 women under 30. We’re big on sharing ideas, brainstorming together, and building each other up — every week we tell each other what we’re most proud of that someone did for their clients (our company ‘snaps’!). It’s super important in the field of social media to constantly be sharing ideas, as the tools we use evolve so rapidly. Every day there’s something new.
One thing that sets us apart from other agencies is our personal, hands-on relationship with our clients. When you hire Metter Media, it’s as if you hired someone in-house on your team. We’re there for our clients ‘24/7’ — we take pride in being there whenever they need us and being nimble enough to have quick reaction times. In social media, there is no such thing as 9 to 5. – LAUREN
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I would probably say just being obsessed with what we do. There’s no way you can run or grow a company in a field you don’t live and breathe. While of course, we all make sure to go into necessary ‘airplane mode’ sometimes (#selfcare is important), we are also constantly on social media in our personal lives. As much as the term makes us cringe, we are millennials, after all!
There’s also the part of us that takes the work Metter Media does personally. People say in business you can’t take things personally, but who cares? If a client is less than thrilled or if something we post isn’t exactly how we’d like it, we make sure something gets done. Because that’s a reflection on us, on our team, and on our company standards. And we like to keep those standards pretty damn high. -LYSSA
