Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Keane.
Lauren, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After the birth of my son George, I was getting prepared to get back to work. I had been in the beauty industry for ten years and I was ready for a change. After discovering the local community college offered an introduction to floral design I immediately signed up. It was an intensive overview of everything you needed to know how to do to be a florist. But as in most trades, it takes time to perfect your craft.
To be perfectly honest it is not something that came naturally to me. I went to work at a very traditional flower shop and they showed me the ropes. The first wedding I ever worked on was my own and looking back I would change a million things, but it made me realized that I love making bouquets and that weddings were the niche that I wanted to focus on.
I took an online wedding intensive course and continued work on my craft. I worked for a few different florists along the way and learned so many valuable hands-on lessons. I feel that my background in hairdressing made transitioning into floral design easier. Color and symmetry theory is equally important in both fields and I love slicing, coloring and adding different materials to add texture.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I wouldn’t say that it has been a smooth road, but I started out very slowly and with a very small investment and therefore the struggles have been paced out accordingly.
My profession is a floral designer, but my most important role is Mother. I have three healthy and happy kids and raising them has put my career in slow motion over the past ten years. But this year I have rediscovered my passion and have really invested a lot more time into building my business and balancing the role of mother.
The most difficult struggle of all is to just balance everyone’s schedules and to not spread yourself too thin. But everything always has a way of working itself out, so I take lots of deep breaths and pray that I don’t lose my mind in the interim!!!! It’s amazing how far a positive attitude can take you and I am really lucky I have a lot of amazing people helping me.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I have a home-based floral design studio and I am best known for weddings. I am most proud of the fact that each wedding I work on is something unique. I have never done two weddings exactly alike. I will not make a carbon copy of someone else’s work because someone sent me a photo.
I put my spin on everything I do. I like to include seasonal and local flowers whenever possible to add texture and create a distinctive vibe for an event. It takes hours and hours of emails to make sure that every detail is perfect for my client’s big event. It is my goal to make sure the end result is exactly what they were envisioning and more.
My clients hire me because they like my distinct style and my creative eye and I hope that shines through in every wedding I work on. I really love what I do.
What were you like growing up?
I was and still am a wild child! I was always picking flowers and playing in the dirt. I loved being outside! I was and still am very adventurous. I love hiking and trips to the beach and lake. But my love of the outdoors was balanced by a love for the city.
My mother made sure that we were very well-rounded kids. We took theater and museum trips often. She made sure I cleaned up well! I think I did almost every activity possible as a kid. Karate, art classes, softball, swimming, theater, girl scouts, the list goes on and on.
I loved being busy and surrounded by friends. I was really outgoing. I met all different types of people and made so many lifelong friends!
