Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenneth DuLong.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kenneth. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always wanted a business since I was a child. I have look into thousands of businesses before finding this great business. The way I got into the moving business was that out of a need for work as my limo company was failing. I had worked as a chauffeur in Boston for over 6 years. I believed I could be a mover due to my lifelong interest in working out, driving and working with clients. I enjoyed it right from the start. The mental and physical challenge each day was appealing. I started at the bottom and worked my way to the top of the company as a foreman, helping with advertising and the website of another company. I had another opportunity fall through while I was figuring out what business to start. That was the signal I needed to start my moving business. I learned to put the customers first. I started doing moving labor and moved into a licensed and insured, full-service and moving labor company. It has been a wild ride to say the least. The company is coming up on five years. I could not be more proud of my crews for helping so many people move. The company has grown every year since we started. We thank all of the client’s that have taken a chance on us.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We have had a lot of ups and downs. We would not change that. As we have had so many positives come of this business. We are in the people pleasing business. There have been so many memorable moments. Early on keeping work coming in while we were getting established was hard especially the first winter. I know of a mover who could not make it. I have to thank my mother for her overwelling support over the years. Now making sure we have enough great trained movers is something we are always working on. We are grateful for this issue. The larger jobs tend to stick out. The many employees (each with their own personality) also come to mind. The jobs we show up to and we do not have enough movers are challenging. We had a four day job where the corporate client insisted we only have two movers. We worked 10-12 hours a day. This client had 100 of everything to pack and load up. Such as bathrobes from all around the world. Also we had a 14 hour move with two trucks and five movers. One truck alone was filled completely with boxes and bins. We got it done. In this business you need to be tough or you will not make it.
Please tell us about DULONG MOVING.
Our company has been built on giving excellent customer service as a foundation to every job. We are known for providing safe and efficient moving services. We specialize in moving labor. We also provide the moving trucks and equipment in Massachusetts. We can load and unload pods, containers, trucks, storage units and almost anything you can think of. We are the movers to call even last minute. We have shown up in less than two hours many times to help people. Our movers are trained to listen and be considerate of our clients’ home and as people. We realize moving day is one of the most stressful days in anyone’s life. Another thing that makes us different is that we look to help each client, not just book the job. We love to show people new ways to move across the country using containers and trailers not just large van lines or with a moving broker. We can provide the best moving labor. We are tough enough to get through almost any challenge and caring enough to move people into the many assisted living facilities we work with.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I am very proud of the company. You really have to make mistakes to learn what not to do. Luckily I had made so many working at the company before. We would like to hire more slowly. We vet people well to ensure they are safe to work in the client’s home. Some people try to do this job that do not love it. They do not make it long. There are many sacrifices you make each day. Another lesson we have learned is that you should ask a lot of questions to have as good an idea of what you are getting into. We have been lucky to get some of the great people who have worked for us over the years. We treat our client’s with respect are quick to take responsibility for our mistakes and that has our referrals coming in from all over. We have learned to be humble but confident in our skills and team.
