Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Gould.
Kayla, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve wanted to be a florist since I can remember, it was written in my “future plans” section in my 5th grade year book, actually. I worked for another company for 6 years being a floral designer- and then chose to take a chance and start my own company! I started Buds in October of 2017 and have been going at it ever since!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can’t sit here and say that any part of starting a business is easy. Especially going into something totally on your own. From the very start of getting a hold on all the licensing you need, coming up with your logo, being your own finical planner & advisor, buying the product and knowing how much you need, pricing everything out, physically designing each bouquet or arrangement (my favorite part), social media, event planning, you get the gist. Not easy what so ever, but so unbelievably fulfilling.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Buds – what should we know?
Buds is a specialty/ boutique flower company. Every arrangement has its own “special something” to it. I wouldn’t say I “specialize” in anything specific because I’m open to any ideas my clients have- but I’m definitely more on the “whimsical” or “boho” style of things. I love the use of succulents in my arrangements. I like using different heights and angles with my flowers to give each arrangement different depths and looks.
I would have to say I’m most proud of my clientele as a company. Starting off with a blank slate is never simple. I wouldn’t of been able to take off as quickly as I did if it weren’t for word of mouth from my clients. And they’re very loyal customers as well!
Like I mentioned before I have a very whimsical and boho look to my designs. I try to stray away from anything “cookie cutter or bland” I LOVE bright colors and using lots of wild flowers- but also love all white arrangements. I would have to say it’s just the look of what I create and how different my designs are that sets me apart from any sort of big name competitor. There’s special thought and unique design to each one. There’s no “formula” or copying arrangements over and over.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Customer service. I like forming personal connections with each one of my clients so they know they’re getting exactly what they’re looking for. Especially my brides. No one wants to feel like just another number on a list, you know? So I think customer service is most important. People want to know you’re engaged and into their floral visions, which I am with every single customer I interact with. So it gives people that comfort of wanting to return, especially when they’re ecstatic with the outcome of their orders.
