Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Shaw.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Katie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Ever since I can remember I always wanted to do hair. When I was a little girl I would cut every single one of my dolls hair super short. When I moved neighborhoods and started at a new school I made friends by doing their hair. I went on to go to a technical high school in Lexington, Massachusetts where I was able to obtain my license at an early age. I trained at a salon in Lexington but my home for 17 years was a salon in Waltham, Massachusetts. I always dreamed of opening my own salon one day. But as life goes, which never goes as planned, it got in the way of my dreams. Life events, marriage, children. But one day almost 2 years ago when I was involved in a serious car accident really had me thinking about my dreams again and everything I’ve set aside. It gave me new motivation to do something great for my family. I needed a change and that moment made me realize what my next step in life would be. I opened Katie Shaw Hair Studio August 1 of 2017. And it was the best decision I’ve ever made. My kids are so proud to say that their mom owns her own hair salon. When I started I really didn’t expect many of my clients to follow me. I remember waking up at 1 o’clock in the morning almost every night paralyzed with fear of am I doing the right thing? Was it the right time? To my disbelief I had about 85% of my loyal clientele base follow me, plus numerous new clients that decided they wanted to come and support my new venture. I’m humbled that they have all stuck by me through all the changes. Most of my clients have been with me 15+ years. I’m thankful and grateful for every single one of them. My goal for my space was to create a warm and relaxing atmosphere for my clients to come and relieve the stress of life, even if for only an hour. We talk about life, love, and everything in between. Being in a suite type, private environment allows my clients to be very open and honest with me. And I can be the same with them. My goal for the future is to continue to educate myself for my clients and to always have my space be a safe and warm place for them to come and get beautiful. Sometimes in life we just need a little push to know our true potential. I now believe the skies the limit and I love that I can show my children that you can do anything you want in life if you just put your mind to it.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey hasn’t been an easy one. A serious car accident when I was 17 almost kept me from being able to stay on my feet for the hours needed to work in a salon. But perseverance and my love for this profession kept me going. I’ve never regretted being in this field. And another car accident two years ago could have been the breaking point for me. But I decided to move ahead and not wait for my dreams anymore. My advice for any women starting out in this field is never give up. If you are very passionate for this business then continue to go for it
Please tell us about Katie Shaw Hair Studio.
I do all aspects of hair care but my specialty would be my special occasion work. That is where my passion lies. I enjoyed the hustle and bustle of the wedding day and the excitement of that entire day. I love being a part of someone’s happily ever after in creating gorgeous hair that will forever be in photos. I’ve recently just discovered the world of styled shoot where photographers get together to build their portfolios. So I come in and do the hair for the shoot and try to re-create the vision for the shoot and what the organizer is looking for. That has been a lot of fun for me and has reignited my passion for the bridal world
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Barriers to female leadership: I feel there are many opportunities for women. The fact that most women work these days outside of the home and try to juggle the home/Work balance is testament that the times are ever-changing. Being the mom to two boys I want to show them that women can work hard and you just as much as men can do. The fact that my work is mainly nights and weekends means that they also see my husband participating in helping them with homework, bedtime, preparing dinner’s and driving them to all their activities. It allows them to see that we work as equals and everyone contributes in the family. I feel as women we are well-positioned for many opportunities since we are able to handle the home/work balance so well.
