Meet Kate McCrea of McCrea’s Candies in Hyde Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate McCrea.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
McCrea’s Candies was born from the recession. We took the setback of a lay-off and turned it into the possibility of creating something new. Making caramel started out being a fun way to keep our spirits up but quickly became the opportunity we’d been looking for. After doing the hard work of testing the concept, incorporating, and creating and testing the business plan McCrea’s started growing and hasn’t stopped. We make caramel with care. We use only real-food ingredients. Our beautiful packaging is gift-ready. Because of that we work both in the specialty food industry and the gift industry always striving to give our customers a delicious candy that is perfect for sharing.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Growth is challenging. There are always different bottlenecks to address and parts of the company that need more space, more machinery, and more people. Our response to that is maximizing efficiency. When a problem crops ups we work as a team to see if there are any stop-gap or short-term solutions we can apply until we can solve the problem long-term. We had serious delays in packaging deliveries last year and had to work from delivery to delivery in order to keep our orders flowing out the door at the busiest time of the year! It required extra effort and coordination among all of our departments to make sure our orders went out on time even though our packaging was coming in little-by-little and one flavor at a time! But WE DID IT!!! What a relief it was when we were finally through that rough patch!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with McCrea’s Candies – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
McCrea’s Candies specializes in making caramel. We make stand-alone caramel in 15 flavors using fresh herbs, spices, salts, and spirits. We make caramel for other creators of fine foods including ice cream, chocolatiers, and topping manufacturers. Our caramel is cooked slowly and the flavor is allowed to develop through natural processes. We use only real-food ingredients and source what we can locally. In order to fully appreciate what sets us apart you need to try one of our exceptional caramels, once you do, you’ll see why people are buying McCrea’s for everyone on their gift list.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We continue to grow very quickly! McCrea’s is spreading geographically as more and more people get a taste of our wonderful caramel. There are additional products in our future but right now we’re focused on keeping everyone happy with the caramel flavor of their choice.
