Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Kelley.
Kate, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Photography has been a passion of mine since I was a child. I’ve always had a love of capturing special moments and more importantly the people in my life.
Two years ago, I decided to finally take the leap and turn my passion into my business; Kate Kelley Photography. Since then it’s been a whirlwind. I’ve gotten to work with so many wonderful people. Each time I go into a session, it’s a new experience. I absolutely love what I do. I have a sign that hangs in my studio that reads “Do What You Love, Love What You Do” and I’m living that and feel incredibly lucky to be doing so. I feel blessed to do something that I’m so passionate about. I’m thankful for every face that has stepped in front on my lens and that they trust me to capture these milestones in their lives.
Photographs hold such significance in my life. They have the ability to take you back in time to a special moment, a special place or even to someone who is no longer with us. My goal is for my clients not just to love their photographs today but to love them for years to come.
One of my favorite photographs is of me & my mom when I was only a few months old. It is by far one of the most precious things I have in my possession. The person taking that picture forty years ago had no idea the significance that photograph would have in my life. It sits on my desk and brings me enormous comfort in my mom’s absence.
Photographs are about more than just a taking good picture to me. It’s about connecting with each client and capturing the laughs, the smiles, the love & the moments because you never know the significance that photo might have in someone else’s life.
Has it been a smooth road?
Since launching my business there have been many challenges for me both personally and professionally. From a business standpoint there is a lot learn. Photography is not just about taking pictures, there is so much technology involved which is not my strong suit. It’s been a huge learning curve for me. I’m constantly trying to learn more to improve my craft and grow my business. Social media plays a huge role in getting my work out there for people to see, but it’s definitely pushed me way out of my comfort zone to do so.
On a personal level a few months after launching my business my youngest daughter was diagnosed with a rare heart condition at the age of one. It has been by far one of the most terrifying and challenging experiences in my life. This happening as I was building my business was really difficult. It’s been really important for me to find balance between home and my work. It’s still a struggle at times but it’s something I’m always striving for. Going through this experience with my daughter and our family is a huge reminder that life changes quickly. We don’t know what tomorrow brings so go after your dreams. Take the risk, At the end of the day though there is nothing more important than your family & your health.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Kate Kelley Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I founded Kate Kelley Photography in 2016. I specialize in portrait photography. I love working with families, children, newborns, seniors and professionals. I don’t think I could choose a favorite type of portrait. I enjoy them all so much and each is so different. I love capturing the bond and love between each family I work with. Working with babies and children is always so much fun to see them at each new milestone. One of my favorite things to do during a senior portrait session is to photograph the senior with their parents because I always think this moment is just as big for the parents as it is for the senior-maybe more. Truthfully, I love capturing it all. Celebrating a new baby or someone’s baby getting ready to go off for college, it’s all important. I’m just lucky I get to share in these milestones with my clients.
I think clients enjoy that their session is a very personal experience. It’s important to me for each client to feel relaxed, comfortable and that they have fun during their session. I always want to capture each client’s personality and their own uniqueness. I think what sets me apart is because I’m a mom to three young kids – I get it. When a two-year-old isn’t ready to have their picture taken – I get it. Having patience and making clients feel comfortable is a big part of my job.
The thing I’m proudest of would be when my clients fall in love with their photographs and tell me how meaningful they are to them. That to me is everything. It’s why I do what I do. It’s why I love what I do.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Boston is such a fun and diverse city. There is so much to do and see throughout the year. I love how much history there is in Boston. I’ve lived here all my life and while I have favorite spots in Boston there is always something new and fun to do.
I’m proud of the way Boston people come together in hard times. I think the people of Boston have proved that time and time again. Even despite our many differences, when we come together, Boston is one tough city with people who truly care for this city and the people that live here.
What do I like least about Boston? Easy. The traffic.
