Meet Karen Kelleher of Boston Thermography Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Kelleher.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
While I was completing my Masters in Natural Health Degree, my good friend Laurie was diagnosed with Breast Cancer at age 32. They determined that her tumors had been growing in her mid 20’s. She was married and had a 4-year-old son so this was devastating news for her and her family. She had a mastectomy and chemotherapy and later passed away at age 39.

Shortly after her passing, I found an article in a magazine about Breast Thermography which I had never heard of before. This was over 12 years ago so it was very rare to find centers that offered this service. This help sparks my interest in opening up a center to offer thermal imaging in the hopes to inspire women to lead healthier lifestyles and consider earlier screening methods than those that are offered later on in life.

I thought if women were able to start tracking their breast health in their 20’s, over time we could potentially see changes in the breast health at the very early stages. Some breast cancers are due to environmental or lifestyle factors so making lifestyle changes can be very important in reducing our risk. It took me over 7 years before I was able to open Boston Thermography Center and we have been in operation for over 5 years and are continuing to grow.

Has it been a smooth road?
Having a startup business these past 5 years has been difficult with the state of the economy. This service, unfortunately, is not covered by insurance so it is a paid out of pocket expense. With the changes in healthcare, most people I have met, talk about how their health insurance coverage has been reduced, while the cost of the insurance in general and deductibles have increased significantly.

In the beginning, working with the SBA, funds were not readily available for startups. What I found was that they were not lending unless you had been in business for 2 years and had significant revenue. Not a great environment for a business just starting out.

Also on a personal level, I became a “Nana” to my grandson Javian. He had some neurological developmental issues and was unable to sit up and crawl. He had a tremendous amount of therapy for years and we never knew if he was going to be able to walk. This was so heartbreaking as I felt so helpless. I am happy to say that he started walking at age 3 and now at 4 he runs! Javian has been an inspiration for me to never give up!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Boston Thermography Center story. Tell us more about the business.
Boston Thermography Center offers Medical Thermal Imaging which is the use of an infrared camera that allows you to see the range and amount of heat or thermal energy that is being emitted from the body. Thermography is non-invasive, safe, painless, and radiation free.

Our focus is on tracking breast health but we also offer full body thermography which can identify and monitor inflammatory conditions, pain, musculoskeletal disorders and nerve conditions. We also offer other services such as Biofeedback, Ionic Foot Baths and Lymphatic Drainage with Cynthia Reilly, P.T. Our newest service that will be available in the next month that we will be offering is a new cutting edge Hair Scan that is based on Epigenetics Indicators.

Our goal is to work with each client to help in the optimization of their health in a non-invasive way.

We strive to offer a more personal approach and we always offer free consultations. Many times I have been on the phone with potential customers over a half hour! All of our equipment is portable so we are able to travel and offer services outside of our immediate area.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I am finding that more people are becoming their own health advocates and educating themselves to help in creating and living a more healthier lifestyle. I believe there can be a balance between Mainstream Medicine and Alternative Medicine. I see the trend in the future a more Holistic Approach with Integrative Medicine being the norm.

With that, I am in the process of completing my Doctor and Ph.D. in Natural Medicine from Quantum University for Integrative Medicine. I hope in working with other doctors, specialists, and other holistic practitioners we can help the patient through the healing journey not only at the physical level, but at the spiritual, vital, and mental level.
