Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian De La Garza.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am a Metalsmith based out of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. After receiving my BA in Jewelry/Metals, I began working in the industry for Tiffany & Co., and then model making for David Yurman, Tiffany, and various other jewelry labels. I left the industry after realizing I needed the freedom to create whatever works I wanted to make. I am currently enrolled in the MFA program at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth so that my work can grow conceptually and I will ultimately be able to teach the craft to others.
Please tell us about your art.
My work is about connection. Connection to the viewer and their experience when interacting with my work. I create talismanic objects that conjure ideas of belief and mystery when worn or interacted with. I like to think of them as artifacts or relics. They have a distinct presence on the body that is empowering and evocative.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
If someone is looking to become a part of a community, I would suggest joining an artist cooperative or a studio space around other makers. I was a part of the Fort Point Arts community for a good while. They are situated in the heart of Boston. I am also a part of a community studio space called The Bench RI where keep my bench and I teach classes. Teaching tends to be a great way to connect with the public and create a community of people who are interested in learning and making as well.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I exhibit my work around the Boston and Rhode Island areas, but the best place to follow along with my work is my Instagram @Julianthe2ndjewelry or my Etsy page to support the work: Julianthe2nd.etsy.com.
