Today we’d like to introduce you to Joselyne Ortega.
With over 14 years of hairstylist experience, a cosmetology graduate from the well-known Toni & Guy Academy, Joselyne “Jawz” is a born and raised Boston native who first discovered her passion for hair care and styling at the young age of 14 where she assisted clients at her parent’s salon. The exposure to this business environment created a passion and fascination for hair within her.
Not only is she an entrepreneur in the hair industry who provides elite services but she’s also an artist who utilizes her creativity in the hair world. In addition to her renowned hair art, she specializes in natural hair care, braiding techniques and protective styling. Being able to incorporate unique, distinct and exclusive artistry in the hair industry, it has gained her celebrity clientele over the years from NBA Boston Celtics player, Gerald Green, Boston Red Sox’s Infielder, Deven Marrero, well known muralist, Don Rimx, to theupcoming artist, Xavier Wolf. In 2017, the ‘ByJawz’ hairstyling business was featured in the Boston Herald newspaper and in Man Magazine, one of highlighted topics was her creation of the Boston Celtics shamrock clover braid that made ‘Jawz’ drop, all over the internet.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve always had to deal with diversity in the hair world as a Hispanic woman. It took me years to be okay being different. It was hard finding my own tune in a world were there’s so many politics and rules of what was thought of to be beautiful and jaw dropping. As trends come and go – I’ve continued to pursue my passion and am continuously rising from the challenges and difficulties that have presented themselves through being true to myself and my vision.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Success requires sacrifice and perseverance. They both travel together but arrive at different moments. Sacrifice will expect you to offer up your deepest treasures, while perseverance pushes you to have a bold tunnel vision with no hesitation . No matter what route presents itself first – there is no room for self pity or to ponder on in desperation. In spite of it, the goal is to strive to be the truest form of yourself each day. As it will lead you into a life filled with sparks leading into your grand moment. Knowing that after all the trial and error, we became exactly who we were meant to be and I plan to pursue success in all areas of my life – after all that’s what being an artist is all about – self discovery.
