Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Young and Tori Bacheller.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
While serving in the Marines I was stationed in California. I fell in love with the craft beer scene out there and the whole vibe the breweries had. My buddy Alejandro and I spent a lot of money on craft beer every weekend so we thought if we brewed our own beer we would save money and learn how to make our own.
We didn’t save any money, but I found my new passion, brewing beer and the “Pipe Dream” of opening my own brewery began, I started creating my own recipes and making beer in my kitchen. I moved back to Massachusetts while working as a corrections officer and joined a homebrew club. I spent my time off of work researching and learning as much as I could about brewing, the craft beer scene, and opening my own brewery someday. Honestly, I never thought it would happen and it would forever be my “Pipe Dream.”
Fast forward a few years when I met my business partner John Bacheller, he and I hit it off instantly and he was really impressed with how much I knew about the art of beer making. He saw potential in me that I never thought I had and he asked me if he could help make this dream a reality. He and I opened Pipe Dream Brewing in May of 2016 with the help of his wife Kerry and his daughter Tori.
Has it been a smooth road?
I think one of the biggest obstacles was going from a small batch home brewer to a much larger scale brewer and turning my passion into a profitable business plan. Another obstacle was finding a location for Pipe Dream before we could even start the paperwork process. We found a location in Brentwood NH which seemed awesome at first but we quickly realized that the sewer was going to be a huge issue and we wanted to find a place that had town sewer and town water.
We looked at a few other places in the Brentwood/Epping area but none of them seemed to really make sense for our vision and our plans. I think a lot of people assume it’s relatively easy to open your own brewery because you get to be the boss and you get to make beer all day but there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes with paperwork, dealing with taxes and managing employees. All the while making a good product that the public enjoys and wants to purchase.
In the beginning, the criticism from the public was tough to deal with but I quickly realized we couldn’t make everyone happy.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Pipe Dream Brewing is a local craft brewery that people and families can come to when they want to have fun, play corn hole, embrace the reggae music, and enjoy premium craft beer. Pipe Dream started as a craft brewery for people to enjoy our brews but it’s turned into more than that.
We are now well known for our reggae music, we have reggae bands from all over the northeast coming to play here. We have a lot of events at Pipe Dream ranging from blood drives to Christmas craft fairs. We support our town by hosting fundraisers and we sponsor a Londonderry men’s softball league.
We have 15 premium crafts beers on tap ranging from stouts to hoppy IPAS, to mouth puckering sours and fruit infused ales. Our flagship beer is the West to East IPA, that was the first recipe I ever created. Some of our most popular beers being the Peanut Butter Chocolate Stout and the Mango IPA.
Pipe Dream has become known for always trying new things and that shows in our tap list. We always have a rotating tap list with our popular beers available but we always like to try new things. We brewed New Hampshire’s first CBD infused beer and I’m always working on new recipes to bring to our customers, people really enjoy our variety.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Londonderry NH is a great place for small, local businesses to grow and make a name for themselves. I would suggest to any business starting out to do their research on any town or location they choose.
