Meet Joe Vaillancourt of Vaillancourt Concrete & Construction

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Vaillancourt.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After graduating High School I had no idea what I wanted to do, I knew I didn’t want to go to college just for the sake of going. Growing up in a small town in NH where everyone was in some facet of the construction industry, I took a job doing concrete foundations and concrete floors. I enjoyed the fast pace and high intensity of concrete construction. The days went by fast and I sometimes got lost in the work. After learning how to finish concrete floors and mastering other concrete construction oriented skills, it was time for something new.

I took a position with another concrete company in the area that did concrete flatwork, Specializing in Stamped concrete which was relatively new at the time. I fell in love instantly. It was the same fast pace and arduous workday but at the end of the day, we had created an art piece, the various colors, and patterns imprinted into concrete all in a race against the clock.

A few seasons of working for this company I found myself feeling the need for something “New” again so I decided to “go on my own” having no prior business experience at all was a huge risk. Only having a strong passion and a great skill-set. It was a struggle from day one trying to get my name out there and hustle up work seemed almost impossible.I spent many days subbing for bigger commercial companies working by the day just to pay bills not to mention it was the start a recession. I had doubts I would make it work but I kept on never losing sight of the end goal.

I remember saying to myself “if you can make it self-employed through the recession, then you can make it period.” After a lot of personal sacrifice and support from family and friends, I’m happy to say we are still here and doing better than I could have hoped for.I have a strong support system in my wife (who also owns her own Business). I have the best team of employees who are dedicated to putting out quality concrete work. and share my passion for the industry. All of the support coupled with a strong work ethic makes us one of the top Decorative Concrete companies in New England

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has by no means been an easy road, it has been a long and hard road actually. I have learned from every mistake and failure along the way. I consider that to be my Education, in lieu of going to College. A good friend of mine once told me “You’re going to pay for your education one way or another ” He was right, I”m still learning daily in fact.

In the beginning, hustling for work was one of the hardest struggles. It often seemed if you got a job you didn’t have the help to do get it done or the money to back it. I owe a lot to my mother Maureen she supported me in the early years when work was slow and money was tight was Thanks, Mom!

As the business continues to grow year after year it has become increasingly harder to find employees that are interested in learning a trade. This is a struggle that most business owners are facing today. The main obstacle for me personally as an owner is time management. Trying to juggle work and my home life. I work 7 days a week whether on the job site or in the office. I’m very lucky to have a wife that understands the time and energy needed to run a successful business as she is a sole proprietor owning and operating a successful hair salon “Hair In The City” in Nashua NH

Please tell us about Vaillancourt Concrete & Construction.
Vaillancourt Concrete & Construction is a Decorative Concrete company that provides all aspects of concrete flatwork, such as sidewalks, floors, curbs, patios, and driveways. We service residential and commercial clientele. Our Specialty and what we are most known for is our Stamped concrete talent. We can design a decorative concrete project to fit any budget. With numerous colors and patterns to choose from its a beautiful alternative to traditional brick or paver walkways and patios requiring minimal to no upkeep for years.

As a company owner, I am most proud that we are able to grow every year, I’m proud that our residential customers and our commercial clients from Developers to Custom builders choose and trust us for their concrete projects whether it’s Stamped concrete, Concrete floors or City sidewalks. We take great pride in our work and we have a dedicated team that strives for quality.

This is I believe the biggest reason for our success and what sets us apart from the others, our hard work as a team to get the job done. This year we are honored to be nominated for an award at “The World of Concrete” a globally recognized convention held in Las Vegas. One of our 2017 Stamped patio projects is nominated as a top 3 finalist in the Stamped Concrete division. (Be sure to check our website to see how we placed!) What is even more special is the patio that got us nominated is located in the small town I grew up in, The same small town my concrete journey started in.

We set our selves apart from our competitors by going the extra mile. I want our customers to enjoy the experience from start to completion. And enjoy their concrete “creation” for years to come. Our passion also sets us apart, I mean I literally get excited meeting with clients to go over shapes, colors, and patterns and I think they see that.and that translates into a great outcome. As my competition label themselves as masons or contractors we like to think of ourselves as a type of Artist.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
At the risk of sounding cliche, there’s nothing specific I would’ve done differently. This concrete journey has taught me a lot about myself, it has made me invaluable friendships with customers, employees, and associates that I will cherish for many years. We will continue to provide quality work in hopes to build even more future friendships with clients and employees.
