Meet Jessica Schores

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Schores, a Registered Dietitian from the Boston area.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jessica. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The one big moment that stands out in my mind on how I got hooked onto nutrition is in high school. I was at a dance camp and there was a speaker who presented to us on sugar and its effects on the body. This was an “ah-ha!” moment for me as I realized how important it is to understand the connection of the food we eat and our body and health. From this moment on, I knew nutrition would be the right career path for me.

I attended college at Umass Amherst and graduated with a Bachelors in Nutrition Science. These four years were both overwhelming and exciting as I was constantly gaining experience and knowledge in a world that is constantly growing and changing.

Post college, I was accepted to the Massachusetts General Hospital Dietetic Internship where I spent the past year obtaining over 1600 hours of supervised practice in different areas of dietetics at the hospital including inpatient clinical care, outpatient counseling, community nutrition, and food service management. In October, I officially became a Registered Dietitian and have now started my professional career.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My path to becoming a registered dietitian has been an exciting and interesting road. I believe that all of the struggles I have faced along the way have allowed me to discover my true passion and core values for nutrition. My main goal as an RD is to meet people where they are at in regards to their nutrition/health goals and find the most enjoyable and easy way for them to reach these goals. I want to help others be mindful in all aspects of their life. I believe all of the stress, hardships, happy and conflicting times people face in their life affect their food intake and overall health. The mind-body connection is one that I have really tuned in to and have loved every second of exploring this connection.

During my journey to becoming an RD, one of my favorite outlets has been my Instagram @Eatbestwithjess. I love to cook and started this Instagram as a way to share fun recipes with family and friends. I am so happy that my Instagram following has expanded and I am excited to continue to share food pictures paired with mindful messages about nutrition/health and everyday living!

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I currently have two amazing jobs as a Registered Dietitian. I work part time at Woburn Wellness Treatment Center, a licensed Alcohol and Drug day treatment center. Here I conduct group nutrition sessions and cooking lessons/demonstrations with the clients. I focus on how nutrition plays a vital role in recovery, and how it can be easy and fun to make healthy, balanced meals.

I also work for Nutrition in Motion as an individual and corporate nutrition counselor. I work one-one and in group settings to help clients reach their wellness goals. Meal planning, disease management, weight management, and debunking nutrition myths are all topics I focus on to help create personalized plans.

Currently, with my jobs and social media platform, I am very proud of how I focus on easy, healthy recipes paired with nutrition messages of allowing oneself to trust and listen to your body to give it the food it wants. The nutritional science component of food is extremely important to me, however, it is just as important to enjoy foods, not restrict, and give your body the variety of food it needs.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
So many to pick from but one of my favorite childhood memories would have to be spending time with my family in New Hampshire every summer and going to Santa’s Village. At this Christmas themed amusement park, there was one bakeshop where you could decorate your own gingerbread cookies. My family and I covered these fresh, soft cookies with loads and loads of sugary frosting. They were so delicious and to this day my family still talks about them! This memory always makes me smile as it shows how the simple things in life such as sweets and family, can create the most joy and happiness.
