Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Duong.
Jennifer, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My parents have been in the nail industry for over 25 years. I grew up in the business and naturally gravitated towards doing nails because of the artistic aspect of it. By the age of four, I was already polishing other little girls’ nails. Doing nails has enabled me to express my creativity, and I’ve always enjoyed the art along with interacting with many different people.
I ended up pursuing a degree in the medical field. While majoring in pre-med and minoring in psychology I learned the importance of sanitation and health practices. This knowledge has directly carried over into our core values at Boston’s Nails & Spa. I am now able to combine my creative ability and sanitation knowledge to provide a new standard of service to our clients.
Looking back and seeing how everything fell into place with the blend of school and my natural artistry, it was a no brainer to go all in. Boston’s Nails & Spa is the direct representation of creativeness and cleanliness.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not! We officially opened in December of 2015. Winter time is usually the slowest time of the year for the nail industry so it was a rough start. Our hidden location did not help with business either. So during the first three months of our grand opening, we stood in the freezing cold at rush hour handing out coupons and business cards to people who would walk pass our salon. We would dedicate our time and effort at local business’ company parties to do people’s manicures free of charge in hopes of getting returned clients. We are always thinking of new ideas to further expand our company.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Boston’s Nails & Spa story. Tell us more about the business.
As a family business we treat our clients like our friends and family.
We specialize in hair removal, manicures, pedicures, and nail extension services.
We are known for our high sanitation standards. We care about our clients’ health so we’ve installed the most up to date ventilation system so that our clients and employees are not inhaling harmful fumes. We’ve also sterilized all of our tools with a hospital grade sterilizer. We line all of our pedicure basins/tubs with a one-time use liner so that we don’t cross contaminate fungus/skin diseases between each client. Disposable nail files, buffers, pumice bars, flip flops, and toe separators are used as well for the same reason. We offer disposable fingerless light protecting gloves for clients who have concerns about UV rays from the gel polish lights. We use state of the art gel machines which are now updated to LED lights instead of UV rays. For those who are still hesitant about gel nails, we offer a large variety of polishes such as vegan nail polish and 5-free polishes that lasts almost as long as gel polish without going the LED lamp for their comfort and peace of mind. We are one of the few salons in Massachusetts that offer dipping powder (SNS manicure). The dip powder manicure lasts longer than a gel manicure, includes calcium and vitamin E, and doesn’t require going under the lamp.
As for hair removal services, we do not double dip into the pot of wax.
I believe what sets us apart from the other salons is our work ethic and cleanliness. We delivery quality, satisfaction, and sanitation to all of our clients. We are constantly keeping up with nail trends, new nail technology, and procedures.
I am most proud of my team. I am very fortunate to have such a wonderful team who are skilled, who love what they do, and genuinely care about our customers’ satisfaction.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I am very fortunate to be brought up in this era where social media has helped my business grow. Without it, I don’t think we would’ve made that much progress within 14 months.
I am also very lucky to have the opportunity to have clients who are so willing to give our salon a chance. Without my clients, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
