Meet Jeffrey LaFleur of Mayflower Cranberries in Plympton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeffrey LaFleur.

Mayflower Cranberries LLC is a family cranberry farm located in Plympton, Massachusetts. The 112 acre farm has 23.65 acres of active cranberry bogs. Owned by Jeff and Kim, they purchased the 130 year old farm in 2009. The LaFleur are members of the Ocean Spray Grower Owned Cooperative. They love to share the cranberry growing experience with guest from around the world. They have experienced based programs that provide visitors a hands-on experience at harvesting the ruby red fruit.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Buying farm today is capital intensive. Many of the varieties of cranberries we grow are over 100 years old. As such they are not as productive as the newer varieties being planted in other growing regions. The challenge we have is to modernize the farm to make sure we are environmentally compatible and economically viable.

Mayflower Cranberries – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our cranberry farm produces fruit for Ocean Spray Cranberries Grower Cooperative. We have a small agricultural tourism business as part of the farm offer guest hands-on experienced based programs and cranberry culinary opportunities. We are particularly proud of being the only grower who actually allows guest to join us in the bog, side-by-side with us in harvesting the crop.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Being able to buy the farm and purse a dream of being a cranberry grower.
