Today we’d like to introduce you to James Weinberg.
Thanks for sharing your story with us James. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am an illustrator and graphic designer. I became interested in poster art and silkscreen printing and set up and studio in Somerville in 2006. I never set out with a plan and started out designing book covers and making silkscreen posters. It has led to creating murals, environmental graphics, branding for local businesses.
One recent branding project has been for the new restaurant in Cambridge, Pammy’s. I work with Stormalong Hard Cider in Sherborn MA. I am coming out with my first children’s book, that I wrote and illustrated this fall, Contrary Creatures, published by Page Street Publishing in Salem. My style is influenced by silkscreen printing, folk art, and typography.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was a little scary breaking out on my own and managing the business but I have been really fortunate to work with some great companies and do work that I am proud of. The hardest thing is there is no set schedule so some months are overbooked and some are underbooked. It evens out in the end.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Weinberg Design – what should we know?
I am an illustrator, graphic designer, and silkscreen printer. I have no specialty, in one year I created murals, illustration for an animated short for World Wildlife Fund and silkscreen posters for touring bands. The range of work is all over the place.
I am proud to have created a 300-foot environmental graphics under the Lombardi bridge in Somerville and my forthcoming children’s book. As a designer, I am very hands-on with the branding, illustration, and silkscreen printing so I can do a wide range of work as an individual designer.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
A lot of people have helped me out along the way. Jeff Grantz got me some really interesting work with Assembly Row, starting with a poster that leads to creating murals and environmental graphics.. The art director Kristen Nobles gave me the opportunity to write and illustrate my first children’s book, which I hope to work on more.
