Meet Dr. Jairo Norena of Digital Health Project in Brookline

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jairo Norena.

Dr. Norena, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Almost two years from now, after I’ve been a Medical Doctor in Colombia for almost 4 years, it was common to be asked by people and friends medical questions all the time, I just noticed that some questions were commonly asked, this is when I decided to make one of my first videos and post it on my Instagram account, after posting one video after the other, my account was full of educational videos and I began to tell my patients to check my videos as well because many of them were answering their common questions. Just after some months, more people was following me and then I noticed that, these videos were important to more people day by day, by that moment, I reached 10k followers and I was really surprised. At this moment, I figured out that I had to keep doing this. Now, since last year, I am living in the USA and I have almost 120,000 followers all over the world. They can find in my accounts a big part of my life style and learn more about self-care.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This has not been an easy road. Something long days in the hospital make you feel really tired and time can easily go fast, making it hard to find the time to answer to your followers and to post videos. Sometimes, it is frustrating to get messages from people in far away countries asking you for help to get medications and to help them with a diagnosis. Unfortunately, I can not make so much through the distance except giving them all my support and be so accurate with my videos to try to help the them somehow.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Dr Jairo Norena (Digital Health Project) story. Tell us more about the business.
I am proud to be the pioneer to the ¨Digital Public Health¨ Movement in my home country and to work hard for it in the USA. At the very beginning, I used to be the ¨Crazy One¨ for my colleagues for doing something ¨that different¨. By now, many of them have looked for me to help them create something similar for themselves.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck is always something necessary but you have to be prepared to receive it. When luck finds preparation, real magic will happen.
