Today we’d like to introduce you to Imani Joseph.
Imani, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a child, I would draw fashion design and I discovered that I was a visual artist. However, in the fall of 2015 I learned that I can expand my performance in art. At the age of 16 I begin watching YouTube make up tutorials. One day I went to my grandparents’ house and found makeup that my grandmother had left behind and began to experiment with it. Every day I would watch make up tutorials and the idea just popped in my head that I was going to become this professional make-up artist. I told my mother that I wanted to become a make-up artist and expand my knowledge in the make-up industry. That day is when I created a social media page and made a brand for myself, now known as Makeup By Imani. From since then she has been my support system fully, along with other immediate family members and close friends. In the beginning practiced on myself, older sister, my mother, and then went to my friends. Maybe a year later I began to slack because I felt the need to compare myself to other makeup artists work and I told myself “Imani, just sitting back and wishing that you can be in a more advanced makeup artists footsteps won’t help you”. Throughout that bump in the road I figured that these artists did not do any of this overnight, they had to practice, go through learning experiences, and learn from mistakes. Not only my family and friends have seen my growth, but I myself have seen my growth over time in my performance. In the beginning of my career I was a very laid back person— like my dreams were going to plop on my lap. My mother and older sister pushed me so hard that is how I am where I am now in my career. In 2017, I said 2018 is going to be my year to shine and so far my clientele has been growing more than I can possibly imagine and I have building myself using new techniques and trying new looks. I want to let people know that no matter what age you are, there is no limit. I would have never in a million years thought that I would have started my career at just 16 years young. Have no fear but, nothing is ever easy, you have to work to get it— to get to where you want to be. Never be satisfied, even if you feel as if you have arrived to your destination. If you feel like you have arrived then you will continue to feed yourself that and you become this stuck up character. You may have everything and think you know everything, but there is always more space for learning experiences.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course it has not been a smooth road. As I said before, there was a time where I was intimidated by other artists work because I was comparing myself to them, but I learned overtime that they got to where they are by practicing and pushing themselves to better their craft.
Makeup By Imani – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company is Makeup By Imani. It comes from my name being Imani and being a makeup artists. I specialize in performing makeup services and using clients as my canvas to enhance their natural beauty. What I am most proud of my company is how much it has grown over 2 1/2 years, though it has more space to continue growth. Makeup By Imani is set apart from others because it is unique. My business is unique because there are not as much teens out here starting their careers at a young age and I feel as if I am representing for my generation and showing that business has no age limit. It never did.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career thus far has to be the networking and getting to work with multiple different personalities and people. Through networking I have met so many great people and it has also assisted me in building up my clientele because at the beginning of all of this, it was a hard process getting clients. Every part of my career just motivates me to better myself as a person and a makeup artist. You just learn various ways to deal with different people, skins problems, and skin tones. I eat, sleep, and breathe makeup.
