Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidi Lanino.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am an artist and educator living and working in the Hudson Valley. I have been making and creating for as long as I can remember. I was born in New York and raised on Long Island. My European mother was a natural maker and always shared her skill and love of creating with us. So much of my childhood education was spent visiting museums in New York City with my family especially the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This is where I realized the power of art and my love for it. I found it so exciting and full of possibility, not always understanding everything I saw but knowing how it made me feel. This intimate connect to art at a young age has influenced so many of my life choices as an adult.
I was a recipient of a full merit scholarship to Pratt Institute and studied drawing and painting. I loved living and studying in a city so full of possibility, it was such a vibrant and creative time to be in New York. After college, I worked in design and became an art director for L’Oréal. I married, had our two boys and then moved as a family to the Hudson Valley, just outside of New York City. Much of my recent work focuses on the physical and figurative landscape. Being drawn to creating in the abstract, I try to express a reflection, a moment, a gesture or feeling of a subject rather than the representation of it.
Please tell us about your art.
My work explores movement, dance and figurative space. I work on paper, canvas, and clay. My most current body of work Folded Females™ employs expressive line, a deep connection to kinesthetic form and the notion of liminal spaces. The works are made intuitively using paper or metal, folded to create a portrait of the female, portraying both strength and vulnerability in their various forms. I reference Greek and Roman sculpture, exploring questions about accepted ideals of beauty and the process of unfolding and folding of oneself in response to each moment of the human, lived experience. I am excited to see where this new body of work takes me.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Currently I have a solo exhibition “Folded Females™” at the Flatiron Prow Art Space in NYC, curated by the Cheryl McGinnis Gallery, and a group exhibition this Fall at SUNY Orange, NY.
You can find my work at; heidilanino.com, cherylmcginnisgallery.com, Saatchi Art, Artsy, and Chairish, and you can also follow me on Instagram or Facebook. I love to hear from people who connect to my work, and you are welcome to join my mailing list for upcoming events or open studio dates.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Be open, make connections, connect to your peers, visit museums, galleries, artist studios, do what you love, stay curious, explore and make mistakes. Head and heart.
