Meet Hanna BenShabbat of Hair by Hanna in West Newton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hanna BenShabbat.

Hanna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My family owned several businesses in Boston, including four hair salons: Samson & Delilah, Piccadilly, Clemente Coiffure and Ultra Cut. I got my start by working at all of the salons, and learned the salon business, from the bottom up, eventually managing three of the salons.

My family’s great support enabled me to persevere and once I found a salon I wanted to buy, my brother, Moses, who is a great businessman and entrepreneur, simply told me, “I have faith in you and you can do it!”

I am the sole owner of Hair by Hanna, and as of this September, I will be celebrating my twentieth anniversary in West Newton Square.

My thriving business owes much of its success to my loyal customers, who, in the Reader’s Choice Awards, awarded me number #1 choice in Newton hair salons, and gold in the regional awards.

My workdays are happy and successful because of my loyal clientele, and many of my clients have become good friends. There is a convivial, upbeat atmosphere, with lots of laughter and occasional singing!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As with any new business, building up a clientele can be a struggle. In the beginning, it was worrisome because there is a lot of competition in the salon business, especially in this area, and to stand out, you must create a niche.

Please tell us about Hair by Hanna.
Hair by Hanna is a full service hair salon. Women, men and children frequent the salon for haircut, organic color, highlights, and styling. The shop has become multi-generational, as the years have advanced.

I offer special hair treatments, such as keratin. Brazilian blow-out and deep conditioning. I am also well known for my blow-outs. Hair by Hanna carries various hair care products, which are for sale.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I am so satisfied with my business and after twenty years, I can honestly say, “I wouldn’t change a thing!”
