Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Crowley.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Was working a lot of dead end office jobs. I liked art in high school so took a couple of college art classes. Wanted to learn more about oil painting and portraiture. Found an amazing yet peculiar master painter in the yellow pages (the real paper book back in the 90s). I took private lessons with Artist Joshua Graham in his messy basement studio in Needham, MA. (Like most artists we like all of our stuff around us) He taught me everything I know about drawing, painting and portraiture. He has passed away but remains alive in all of my work. I hear his words of wisdom while I paint. “Hurry up and slow down.” “Put the brush down, step back and look.” “The light describes the dark and the dark describes the light.” “Do you have a check for me today?”(ha ha JK)
I was lucky to take surface design, faux finishing, Venetian plaster, marbleizing and wood graining classes from the late Sandra Kiss London of Faux Like a Pro. She was an amazing instructor and person. She is missed by all who knew her.
I honed my mural skills painting murals and faux finishes for Jordan’s Furniture. My client’s and I work together to create one of a kind art pieces. From a hand -painted large-scale mural for Jordan’s Furniture showroom to a sweet quote over a crib in a residential nursery, over the past couple of years “Live Event Painting” has become another service I offer. I am an official “Wedding Painter”. Painting at weddings, private parties, and corporate events, guests’ watch as the painting unfolds capturing the feel and life of the moment.
I have been blessed to be able to work with incredible, clients, designers, contractor’s teachers and students. I’ve met so many wonderful people along the way.
John Kelly my fiancé creates amazing furniture and has designed unique pieces. We’ve even collaborated on a couple of projects without killing each other. You may view his work at www.jpkwoodworking.com and www.americanflagboxmaker.com
We have built a 2 story woodshop/painting studio behind our property in Stoughton, MA. Hoping to have classes and workshops up and running in the fall/winter 2018.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are always struggles when running your own business. You have to wear all the hats. Marketing, Accounting, IT etc… And staying creative at the same time.
Some times are slow. Some projects fall through. Some projects turn into nightmares. If you keep moving forward and staying positive things seem to eventually work out.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Crowley Art Studio – what should we know?
I am professional artist, muralist creating custom hand-painted portraits, wall murals, live event wedding painter and more. Also specializing in hand-painted furniture, decorative painting and faux finishes. I work with residential and commercial clients.
I am a classically trained in oils and portraiture. Portraits are one of my favorite things to paint. I feel all artists are unique in their own way. We all have a different styles and techniques. Clients usually chose me because they are attracted to my style or something in my portfolio peaks their interests. No two projects are the same. I have a lot of experience and my clients feel confident choosing me to paint at their wedding, create mural for their nursery, or a portrait as a gift for a loved one. I love what I do.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Experience, well versed in techniques and medium, enjoy creating custom art for clients. I love to see their reactions when the project is completed. Something that starts out as a concept becomes real.
