Meet Erin Baumgartner of Family Dinner in Somerville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Baumgartner.

Erin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Family Dinner is a farmers’ market delivery service. Every week, we find and deliver the best ingredients from New England’s finest farmers and purveyors. Each share contains protein, fruits, veggies and grains. Shares are curated so that the ingredients marry well together, while still giving some flexibility to the adventurous home cook.

Our customers love us because we bring them the best food from local, sustainable farmers and purveyors. Farmers appreciate us because we let them focus on farming. We create demand for our farmers’ products, taking care of sales, marketing, customer acquisition, ecommerce and last-mile logistics so farmers can be farmers.

We founded Family Dinner to build a community around ethically grown, sustainable food. We want to support family farmers while helping everyone eat better and understand where their food comes from.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Is starting a new business ever a smooth road? Joking aside, we have been extremely fortunate to have had a wonderful core group of founding customers participate in the shares and a cohort of incredibly kind and patient farmers to help us along the way.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Family Dinner – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are a Farmer’s Market delivery service. We bring the best of what New England has to offer to your door step each week and provide recipes and kitchen hints to help you enjoy each week’s share. There are a lot of meal delivery services out there, but we hope we have something unique to offer.

We understand the appeal of recipe-delivery companies, but excessive packaging, long-distance shipping and micro-management of your meals is not our style (and not very sustainable).

We seek authenticity. In New England, you don’t have to go far to find it: earnest and honest producers of good food, made the right way, are all around us.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are exciting to be expanding our delivery radius week by week. We started with just a few loyal followers in Somerville and Cambridge but have ballooned out to the Greater Boston area and are peeking into opportunities on the South Shore.
