Meet Emily Hanson of Emily Teresa Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Hanson.

Emily, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I never thought of myself as a creative person. I was always interested in a career in medicine and filled my spare time with athletics. I studied Athletic Training in college followed by a 5-year career at Boston Children’s Hospital. I am now in an accelerated nursing program while running my photography business.

However in high school, my mom had a DSLR Canon camera and I would borrow it any chance I got to take pictures of friends, family, and random objects or scenes I found beautiful. In college, I would constantly go home and borrow this camera until one day it just never went back into my mom’s possession (sorry mom).

After a few years of buying and collecting new lens and offering free sessions to family and friends, I decided to make an Instagram account in the fall of 2015 to display my work.

I made a website shortly after that, purchased new cameras, and kept building my brand and in 2017 I made my business official. I never consciously set out to have a photography business, it just kinda happened organically as my passion grew.

Has it been a smooth road?
If a creative business owner ever says starting their own business was “smooth”, I need to meet them and hear their story haha The experience of starting my own business has taught me so much about myself. My first struggle was finding my own value in my business and in my talent.

There is always the connotation that if you’re working a full-time job while running a business that you’re not fully committed to your business or that you aren’t making enough money to go “full time” with it.

I’ve learned, and still learning to this day, that my success cannot be measured by someone else’s. I take a lot of pride in my nursing/athletic training career while also still having a great amount of passion and drive to build my photography business.

Just because I do both, doesn’t make my business any less valued than the next. I also have a wonderful support team that helps with any struggle that comes my way.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Emily Teresa Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a North Shore-based portrait photographer that offers a variety of session styles including newborn, family, small business branding, and wedding photography. My sessions are laid back, fun, and all about capturing the authentic moments.

I love hearing about my clients lives like where they came from, what means the most to them, careers they have chosen, and of course why they wanted portraits taken.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I lived in Boston for over 10 years from college through my late 20s before moving back to my hometown on the North Shore. I loved walking out my door, passing people left and right as I made my walk to a local coffee shop or jogging to catch the train I was late for.

That hustle and bustle of the city was my way of life for so long that I fed off the energy daily. The only thing that I never liked about Boston was the traffic. I mean it could be noon on an idle Tuesday and 93 would be bumper to bumper- I’ll never understand it haha
