Meet Elizabeth Michaud of Root to Rise Remedies

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Michaud.

Elizabeth, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I began my study of astrology over 20 years ago when I was a film major at Boston University. My screenwriting professor assigned a creative project involving our natal chart, where we had to invent characters based on the planets in zodiac signs. I remember paying $10 for a print out of my chart at a New Age bookstore in Cambridge, knowing instantly that this piece of paper (and the accompanying book of symbolism) was speaking my language. It just made so much sense! I haven’t stopped studying since.

After adventuring through my early twenties from Montreal, Quebec to Lake Tahoe, California, I found myself lacking direction. Through synchronicity, I crossed paths with a professional astrologer, Michael Jernegan, visiting Boston from Seattle. During my first official astrology reading, he offered to be my teacher if I happened to find myself out in the Pacific Northwest. So in 2005, exactly one year after our first meeting, I moved to Seattle. I lived there for seven years, studying and practicing astrology for my friends and co-workers. In retrospect, I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to sit across from a personal guide, receiving direct mentoring in my studies.

In 2012 I moved back to the east coast, still lacking direction in a lot of ways. I had worked as a bartender and waitress since graduating in 2000. Astrology was only a side project, it wasn’t paying my bills– and I was struggling because I wasn’t following my heart. I decided to invest myself more in my career. I had studied evolutionary astrologer Steven Forrest’s work for many years, but it was finally time that I took the plunge and began the official certification process through his program. His teachings have changed my life.

And then last summer my dad passed away very suddenly. I think the loss is a huge catalyst for change. It made my fears of being judged or of failing seem inadequate. Life will be over before I know it! So I quit my restaurant job shortly after and became a registered business in Massachusetts.

Has it been a smooth road?
I don’t think any astrologer has a smooth road! There’s just a general misconception about what astrology is. People assume it’s for entertainment purposes only, sort of like the horoscopes in the newspaper. My biggest struggle has definitely been the skepticism and lack of interest. It’s as if I’m trying to break through public doubt in order to share what I know.

The astrology readings I offer are therapeutic in nature– they expand a person’s self-awareness, helping them to understand their soul’s purpose. This isn’t superficial fortune-telling. Astrology isn’t a religion or a belief system. It’s a tool for understanding the universe, and it offers valuable insight to anyone who will listen with an open mind.

But despite the challenges, I’ve also experienced support from places I didn’t expect, people who have encouraged and assisted me from day one. So even when the pessimism gets to me, I’m lucky to have places to turn to reset my outlook.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Root to Rise Remedies – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My business is Root to Rise Remedies, which I developed after earning my certification in aromatherapy. I wanted to have a physical application of healing to balance the more internal, soul-healing work I do with astrology. So I create essential oil blends designed to support the body and mind during cosmic cycles; for example, making a blend for mental clarity during a particularly stressful and confusing time.

I also offer aromatherapy consultations, where I make customized products designed for specific needs, whether physical, mental, or emotional. And later this year I’m hoping to add Medical Astrology to my offerings, to tie the two modalities of astrology and aromatherapy together.

I love making natural healing blends, but I would definitely say my specialty is individual astrology readings. I’m a counseling astrologer– I want to help people with the heavy stuff in life. Astrology puts words to things that are hard to express, like all the internal processes that go on within our consciousness. It maps out the inner terrain and gives us a clearer perspective of what we need in order to be happy.

Astrology is powerful proof that we live in a meaningful universe. I want to help people feel that connection. To quote a recent client, the readings I provide help people “feel more at home in the world.”

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I live along the coast, so for me, it’s the ocean. I love living in a small seacoast town, especially in the spring and fall.

But overall, I think Boston (and New England in general) has so much to offer– always something interesting going on. I love the energy of the city, and the history and character.

Traffic. I like traffic the least.
