Meet Elizabeth Lima of South Shore Select Soccer Club in Hingham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Lima.

The game of Soccer is one of Elizabeth’s (Liz) most ardent passions. She began playing at the age of 4 and continued on from there to a career full of accolades and various accomplishments. She played at Harvard University and after that semi-professional in Italy.

In 1995, Liz’s father, Laurindo, created The South Shore Select Soccer Club. At the age of 24 Liz decided to join her father and began coaching for the club. Though Liz had several other career opportunities she decided to stay on at South Shore Select full time. Over the last 10 years Liz has realized her vision of an all-girls soccer club that far transcends the soccer field. As Owner, Director of Coaching and a coach of 7 teams herself, Liz has made her mark in the soccer world. South Shore Select is viewed as a place where young girls can go, not just to learn how to play soccer, but to be strong, confident and empowered. As Liz states: “The market that I am in is a very male dominated industry and I hope I am an example for my daughter and all of our girls that women can be tough and strong and successful despite the odds being stacked against us. I hope to teach them that ‘fighting like a girl’ means being fierce and strong and bold and beautiful.” This is the mission that Liz lives by and instills in each player in her club.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road to success has not been easy for Liz. As a woman trying to make it in a male dominated industry, she has had the odds stacked against her. This has not been and will never be something that has stopped Liz from being successful. With her determination and hard work, she has grown a small soccer club into one that competes at the highest levels within our nation.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the South Shore Select Soccer Club story. Tell us more about the business.
South Shore Select is a soccer club that was created in 1995 to transform young women into great soccer players. Since Liz has taken over the club, that mission has developed into “developing strong, confident and well-rounded young women through the game of soccer. We hope to make our girls the best players they can be, while maintaining their love and passion for the game of soccer. We strive to make each player a better individual off the field as well by teaching them about a sense of community and social responsibility. We want them to remember their time on the soccer field as a positive, competitive and heartfelt experience that prepared them for their future endeavors.” This mission is what makes South Shore Select so unique as well as what makes every coach, player, and parent involved in our club so proud to be a part of it.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The soccer industry has changed dramatically over the past ten years. We have strived to remain true to our values throughout this constant change and our goal has always been and will remain to develop young soccer players into the best players they can be. This mission has changed over the years into developing young girls into strong, confident, and empowered young women as well. With this in mind, our goal is to maintain this mission now and in the future as it is what make South Shore Select so unique.

We do feel it is important to understand the landscape and be flexible enough to grow with the industry. We want to ensure we are providing as many opportunities as possible for our players. Many Select Players are currently involved in National, Regional, and State pools and we will continue to open as many doors as possible for our kids.

We feel the most important part of growth, is having positive leaders and coaches for our players. We strive to provide the best possible role models for our kids and recently introduced the Head Women’s Soccer Coach at Boston College as our Senior Director. Alison Foley has been an unbelievable addition to our club and provides the leadership and knowledge to help us to navigate the best avenues for future growth.

We feel we are putting ourselves in the best position for future growth, but always make decisions that support our core values. We believe that remaining true to our beliefs, will always provide the best path and experience for our players.
