Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Kara Firestone.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I originally went to college for a degree in nutrition. After my first year, I worked part time at a practice in New York, which provided chiropractic and nutrition services. I absolutely loved the holistic approach to health and how the two complemented each other. I was amazed at the results patients were receiving. It was then I decided that I not only wanted to be a nutritionist, but a chiropractor as well.
After finishing undergrad, I enrolled in chiropractic school, where I completed my Doctor of Chiropractic and Masters in Nutrition degrees. In 2006, I began practicing as an associate at the office that originally inspired me.
In 2010, I moved to Massachusetts, where I became an associate in a wellness center. It was a great experience and I worked with an amazing chiropractor. A few years later, I took the plunge to open my own practice. My husband and I worked together to create Firestone Chiropractic & Wellness, which opened in November 2013.
When we first opened, it was me, a massage therapist, and a medical biller. My husband worked as our evening/weekend receptionist, when he wasn’t working his full time job. Today, we have 2 chiropractors, 3 massage therapists, 2 receptionists and our medical biller. My husband is still involved with the business, but he does more “behind the scenes” work such as marketing, our website, and operations. This allows me to focus on patient care, which is what I love to do.
The journey hasn’t always been easy, but it is very rewarding. We have incredible patients and an amazing team, which makes all the hard work worth it.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Dealing with insurance companies is never easy. Each has multiple plans with different requirements and nuances to manage. Thank goodness for our medical biller.
At times, it has been challenging to find the right employees as we grow. We’re very selective and want only the best to represent our practice.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Firestone Chiropractic & Wellness story. Tell us more about the business.
Firestone Chiropractic & Wellness specializes in total body wellness. Our multi-disciplinary practice integrates chiropractic care, nutrition services and massage therapy to improve the quality of life of our patients. Our mission is to restore our patients’ health and full ability to function through natural methods, while also providing them with the knowledge and understanding necessary to maintain it.
Each practitioner is trained in a variety of techniques. Patients are treated with specific treatment protocols that are based on their individual needs.
What separates us apart from others?
Chiropractic – We check patients from head to toe – it’s not limited to just the spine. We use a variety of adjusting techniques from traditional to light force depending on the needs of the patient. Patients range in age from newborn to elderly.
Nutrition – We use a system of muscle testing that allows the practitioner to detect and correct biochemical imbalances in the body.
Massage – While it’s nice to have a relaxation massage, our therapists typically work with patients seeking relief from muscular imbalances. They will focus on specific muscles to address the root of the problem.
