Meet Deepak Bardhan of Deepak Bardhan Photography in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deepak Bardhan.

Deepak, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was twelve years old when I read my dad’s personal diary. In the diary, he had written a lot of important dates, times, emotions and the silliest of things, it threw a half smile across my face, it was beautiful. I decided to write my own diary and I found myself doing some drawings of the incidents that happened that day. I drawing were bad but it gave me a better understanding. Pictures always helped me. I hate to read but if it has pictures in it, I’m so into it. My favorite books are the comics. The importance of pictures, images, and drawings got me into Photography. I started with a film camera, which really helped me with my perspectives but I never fully understood the technicality of it until I got my first DSLR. My first couple of years I was very low key until I bought another DSLR with my own money. I wanted to showcase my work so I headed off to the streets of Boston finding new perspectives, interesting people, street moments, lifestyle, sneaking up on rooftops, trying to take pictures which could tell a story. I wasn’t making any money but I loved every bit of what I was doing. It wasn’t until the first week of December in 2016 that somehow Boston Globes discovered me and wanted to publish my work for their next edition. It was then when I started to get clients coming my way to take portraits. I put street photography aside and started doing more portraits. Currently, I’m getting my way into weddings. And I think wedding photography is the most beautiful form of photography. Capturing moments of joy, happiness, and various emotions is truly magical.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting out is always the fun part of photography. But once you start to get into business there is a lot of competition and it gets difficult. Photography is all about having connections no matter how talented you are. It’s tough to get through the door. I still remember taking really good pictures of the people and all you’d get in return is, ‘you’re the man Deepak’ or just a pat on your shoulder. Its fun when you do it as a hobby but, when it’s a way of your income, you may not enjoy the outcome though you love photography.

You must stand up for yourself, have confidence and take pride in your work so that people will take you seriously.

Deepak Bardhan Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m a freelancer. Currently, I’m trying to specialize in Weddings and Elopements. But, I also sneak off taking pictures of anything I find captivating. I’m always travelling and the camera always goes when I’m too tired to take a mental picture.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Getting featured in Boston Globes and a couple of other magazines is always a proud moment. But, you feel most proud of yourself when your friends and people who hear about you, trust you with their weddings!
