Meet David McDonough of Boombastic Films in South Shore Massachusetts

Today we’d like to introduce you to David McDonough.

David, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I saw my first horror movie, the original Dawn of the Dead when I was very young. Ever since then, I knew I wanted to be a Horror Director. I started editing in 1996, in my communications/tv class while attending Quincy High School. I made a bunch of random short films. But didn’t really find a core group of people that were as passionate, and dedicated to filmmaking as I was.

In 2007, and 2008 I made 2 short documentaries. And in 2009, I dusted off a script I had written 5 years earlier. Got together with my good friend Dann Thombs. We co-directed and co-starred in it. Thus began the 10-year odyssey that would be our first short film. The black and white, horror comedy, short Room-Mates. Still yet to be released. But coming soon.

In 2013, I wrote a script for a 1980’s style throwback, holiday-themed horror comedy, slasher Groundhog. In 2014, I was contacted by Mathew Fisher, owner of the independent film company BoomBastic Films. Mathew wanted to see if I was interested in being an Associate Producer on his short psychological thriller, short Insomniac. And offered me the opportunity to work on set, pay my dues, and learn the ropes. So I joined the BoomBastic Films team, and we set forth on making the now multi-award winning Insomniac. I wore many hats on set.

The following year I worked on the final scene of his comedy feature DJ Stan Da Man and learned set building. Then in the winter of 2016, we took my script Groundhog and made it into a feature. Then we worked on a slew of short horror films for anthology films out of the UK, that both he, and I Directed. In the winter of 2017, we premiered Groundhog in theaters. And this summer so far we released DJ Stan Da Man on DVD. And have Groundhog coming out on DVD August 24th.

Next up in the fall, we are filming Mathew’s next horror feature, The Wicked Hollows.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road so far has been less than smooth. But I believe art that is created with struggle isn’t worth a look. Working with such low budgets makes things complicated. But allows us to think creatively on our feet, thus creating a better film.

Trying to get noticed as a small independent film company, in a city that caters more to the Wahlbergs, and the Scorsese. And much higher budgeted Hollywood projects. But I believe those films can be hit or miss under the Hollywood eye. Compared to us as diehard film fans. We make films we wanted to see growing up.

Films for fans. By fans. And so far it has gained a growing audience.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Boombastic Films story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a part of the independent film company BoomBastic Films. Along with owner Writer, Director, Producer Mathew Fisher. Actor, Producer Alexander Hauck. With the recent addition of our great friend Melissa Potter. She helps us with promotion and is an angel on our shoulders.

We also have a sister company, Cosmic Boom Casting. Run by our awesome friend Cindy. Another shoulder angel to us. Within the company, I am a Writer, Director, Producer, and Musical score musician. I am also the company’s in-house editor.

We are known for the Mathew Fisher Directed comedy DJ Stan Da Man. The multaward-winningng psychological thriller, short Insomniac. And the 1980’s throwback style, Holiday themed, slasher horror comedy feature that I Directed, Groundhog. And a slew of Horror shorts for horror anthology films out of the UK.

What I am most proud of, and what sets us apart as a film company is that we can make quality looking, entertaining films. On a below shoestring budget. We produce, premiere in theaters. And self release our films on DVD. Without the help of Hollywood. Or a money man.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see things going about the same, as far as the mainstream films are concerned. We will just continue doing our thing. Making the best films we can. If someone notices, they notice. If they don’t. That won’t stop us from doing what we do. We go against the grain. And stay grounded.
