Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan McColgan.
Dan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Once upon a time I was a college student in a sleepy town in VT studying to be a history teacher. To fund that, I took a job in an autobody shop as a helper. In the first 10 minutes of my career there, I knew that was the world I belonged in.
I completed my education but remained in the auto body repair field moving to Boston and honing my skills as a welder, metal fabricator and repair specialist. After a 15 year career in that field I decided I wanted to do bigger, heavier work. I had saved up some money and enrolled in a maritime welding training program in Jacksonville, FL. The focus was on heavy welding in a marine environment including a unit on underwater welding. It was the most interesting thing I have done in my life to date.
Upon completion of that program I took a job in a small fabrication shop where I was able to round out my skill set to include different welding processes I had yet to encounter. I was later accepted into Ironworkers Local 7, which I am still a member of, and got some real heavy field construction experience. The skills, experience and benefits I received through hard work and union membership allowed me to take the leap to self-employment in Dec. of 2016.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road so far has been winding. The biggest challenge to date has been brand awareness. When we first started no one knew we existed. With a limited marketing budget our primary advertising has been cold calls and word of mouth. I am happy to report that August 2017 has been our best month to date. The cold calling has paid off and we have retained nearly all our customers as repeat business and we are planning to expand our online presence in the near future.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Grand Cove Welding story. Tell us more about the business.
Grand Cove Welding is a full service welding and fabrication company serving Boston and Southern Mass. We specialize in mobile repair and field fabrication of aluminum, steel and stainless steel for the marine, construction and heavy equipment industries.
We are equally proud of our large-scale commercial projects and small one-off repair jobs alike. We believe that taking pride in all jobs of any size should be the cornerstone of any successful business.
Our diversity and portability are what set us apart from other welding companies. Be it a production welding job on a steel pier framework, a fabrication job on stainless steel kitchen equipment or a repair on a cracked aluminum boat T-top, Grand Cove Welding will come to you and get the job done.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck has been extremely important. I was lucky enough to be accepted into Ironworkers Local 7 which was the spring board to the path I am on now. I have been lucky enough to have a supportive wife who has pushed me to achieve my goals and make this business happen.
