Meet Courtney Doherty of Courtney Saulnier Doherty Photography in Walpole

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Doherty.

Courtney, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always been interested in photography, growing up I was always taking pictures of my friends and family. When my own nieces were born, I truly began a passion for photography. Once I started my own family and had my sons, I decided to turn my hobby into a career. Family and friends had started asking me to take their children’s portraits for Christmas cards and at events. I brought my camera everywhere so I could learn and practice all the time. A couple of well-known photographers in my area were very gracious and helped me along the way to learn the art of photography and how to really make the best out of my career.

I took the leap and have never looked back. It was the best decision I have ever made. I truly love my job and enjoy going to work each day.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say overall it has been a smooth road. Mistakes were definitely made along the way, but that’s the best way to learn. I wish I educated myself sooner on the art of newborns, I was all self-taught the first few years. Taking classes and workshops is so important in this business. It is so easy to waste money on things you do not need in the beginning. When you are just starting out, you really do not have extra money, and spending on things you do not need is a common mistake. My biggest challenge now that I run a full time business is the balance between family and work. Making time to do both and be truly happy is hard.

Please tell us about Courtney Saulnier Doherty Photography.
I specialize in posed newborn photography that is definitely what I am most known for. Clients come to my studio usually within the first two weeks that their baby has been born for a portrait session. A session in my studio, lasts 1-2 hours. It is very warm and cozy and the quiet atmosphere helps keep baby asleep so I can pose them quickly and safely. I would say I am most proud of my progress throughout this journey. It is fun to look back at old images and compare to new ones, the growth is amazing. There are so many newborn photographers in this area, it is hard to stand out. I think my specialty poses and creativity with newborns sets me apart. I love challenging myself with new ideas each time a baby comes to the studio.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memories are being with my family at our home by our pool and spending time at the beach.
