Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Roberts.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I worked for over fifteen years in the Beauty Industry as a model, hair stylist and makeup artist. This was a job that left me both stressed and depressed. I struggled for many years with the pressure of this industry to look a certain way which left me unhappy and I turned to some very toxic habits to cope. Eventually, I found Yoga and Pilates as a new way to release the tension and stress I held in my body, mind and soul. Yoga and Pilates had helped me to deal with my toxic lifestyle and connect to my body and learn to cope in healthy ways.
One day something changed in me and I realized that I didn’t want to help people LOOK good anymore, I wanted to help people FEEL good. I felt myself being called to a healing path, not only for myself but to share with and help to heal others. I had to let go of some self-defeating habits; which I was able to do through a regular Yoga and Pilates practice. I am now inspired everyday to be healthy and happy; and I want to inspire others to be healthy, and share the gift of Yoga and Pilates with everyone.
After over ten years of practicing Yoga and Pilates I decided to enter a training program. Originally, I thought it would be a great way to deepen my personal practice. I had not intended it to become a full time career. I am now a Yoga and Pilates teacher in the Central Massachusetts area. I am a 200 Hour Yoga Alliance registered and certified yoga teacher. I mostly teach Vinyasa and Gentle Yoga, as well as workshops on Spinal Mobility, Back Health, Meditation and the Chakras.
I am also a certified Pilates Teacher. I have over 600 hours of training and experience in Pilates on all of the Pilates apparatus including the Reformer, Cadillac, Chair and all auxiliary apparatus . A year ago, I opened Worcester Pilates, a boutique Classical Pilates studio in Worcester, MA offering private instruction on the Gratz Pilates equipment. I am dedicated to preserving, sharing and promoting the classical work that Joseph Pilates originally created.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting my own Pilates studio was a scary undertaking. I left the security of teaching at other studios in the Boston area to open my own space. It took some time for me to establish a reputation in the Worcester area and gain enough clients to pay the bills and make enough money to pay myself.
I’m very blessed that after a year of being in business for myself I have some incredible clients who share their lives with me. I have seen some major improvements in their strength and Pilates practice in such a short time. I am now in a place where I’m looking at growing my business even more over the next year, including purchasing more equipment and moving into a larger studio space.
Please tell us about Worcester Pilates.
Worcester Pilates is a boutique Pilates studio that provides private Classical Pilates instruction on the Pilates apparatus. Whatever my client’s goal is, during our one on one instruction I guide them, and provide inspiration, motivation and accountability to help achieve their fitness and wellness goals.
The benefits of a regular Pilates practice are abundant. Pilates can help relieve low back pain, increase flexibility, improve posture, correct imbalances in your body, create greater body awareness and build all over body strength.
I work with many clients who struggle with persistent aches and pains, have spinal issues such as scoliosis, are dealing with chronic pain such as sciatica, are in rehabilitation for past injuries or recovering from surgeries such as knee and hip replacements. My clients range from the young to the elderly. I have extensive experience with clients who are breast cancer survivors, rehabbing from injuries or dealing with chronic conditions such as neurological conditions, diabetes and more.
It is my mission to share the message that Pilates is for everybody and every BODY, regardless of age, fitness level, body type, injuries or medical/physical condition. I hope that I create a safe space for my clients regardless of their fitness or physical level to come and work towards achieving their fitness and wellness goals.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I grew up on dairy farms in Florida and always enjoyed the time we spent as kids out on the farm. We would often spend time with the animals we had on the farms such as cows and goats. Even to this day I love being outside, spending time in nature and working with animals. And yes, I know how to milk a cow.
