Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Lang.
Chris, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Photography has been my hobby since I received my first “real” camera in high school in the 1980s, a Canon AE-1. I was photography editor of my high school yearbook and learned to develop my own black and white prints. Photography remained just a hobby for many years after. In 2013, several friends who had seen some of my work on social media suggested that I turn my hobby into a profession. So in 2013, Chris Lang Photography was born.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The main struggle for me has been finding time to focus on my photography. My “day job” is as an attorney. Between my law firm and my family (my wife and I have two teenage daughters and a dog), it is not always easy to find time to escape for a few hours to go on a nature shoot, to schedule family portrait sessions, let alone to find the time for post-shoot editing and photography marketing. But it’s a hobby that I love, and so I am able to find the time to enjoy it. The other struggle for a new photography business in the startup cost of high-end equipment. Between new camera bodies, lenses, printers, and supplies, the cost can be significant.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Chris Lang Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I sell matted and framed prints and photo notecards. Most of my images are of Boston and its surroundings, with a special emphasis on presenting common images in novel ways. I try to be creative in my use of camera angles, compositions, lighting and post-shoot processing that viewers are surprised at how a place they have seen a thousand times can be seen in a new way.
I also take headshots, family portraits, theater and corporate event shoots. As with my print work, I try to produce unique images that capture special moments in the lives of my clients. I want my images to make my clients smile and realize that in every day that passes, special moments are there if we can only slow down and experience them.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in “luck”. Rather, I think that in any business, and certainly in mine, you have to remain open at all times to opportunities that present themselves. Always being open to a new opportunity. For me, my start was selling prints at art shows. But as my work became more widely known, I was increasingly asked for family shoots and corporate events, so I incorporated that into my work.
Pricing:
- Matted prints start at $40 and go higher depending on size and media type.
- Family photo shoots are $165 for the sitting fee, and them prints are purchased separately in an online gallery.
