Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheryl Richardson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Cheryl. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in a family business where I worked with my dad as a tax consultant. I specialized in small businesses and through thousands of conversations with owners, learned a lot about what prevented them from achieving success. After seeing a deeper need to “grow the entrepreneur” in addition to his or her business, I left the tax world behind, spent three years training as a professional coach, and opened a private practice. I focused on self-development as a path to business success and my company took off!
In 1999 I published my first book, Take Time for Your Life, and shared the process I used to help clients create successful companies and careers without sacrificing their quality of life. Two years later, thanks to Oprah Winfrey, I was invited to lead a year-long series on her show based on my book, and that allowed me to expand my audience beyond business. A writer at heart, I went on to publish several more books including Life Makeovers, Stand Up for Your Life, The Unmistakable Touch of Grace, The Art of Extreme Self Care, You Can Create an Exceptional Life (with Louise Hay), and my latest: Waking Up in Winter: In Search of What Really Matters at Midlife. This new book is a departure from the others in that it’s a memoir in journal form about the profound (and important) wake-up call we experience at midlife.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While many of the bumps along the way were external – starting a new business on the side while working for someone else; working hard to land potential new business only to have it go to a competitor, and navigating the financial fragility of a startup; the more challenging obstacles were internal. Growing a business required me to develop the courage to take on big fears like getting on stage in front of 3,000 people to talk about my work. It forced me to develop the confidence to ask for what I was worth and then some. And it helped me to develop important life skills like the ability to focus, to follow through, and to keep going in spite of self-doubt. These inner skills are the secret to long-term success!
Please tell us about Cheryl Richardson.
My primary work is as a writer, publishing books and a weekly blog at cherylrichardson.com. And while I no longer maintain a private practice as a coach, I now invest in start-up companies based in New England, through an angel investment group called Launchpad Venture Group. It gives me a wonderful opportunity to coach smart CEOs who are building companies that will make the world a better place for us all.
